THe USS Yorktown CV-10 was built, and renamed after the original USS Yorktown CV-5 was sunk at the battle of Midway during WWII. THis ship was also used in a few movies -THe Fighting Lady. I took the family down for a tour a week or so ago. I love the Navy. My stepfather worked with NavAir at Naval Air Systems Command as I grew up. I received a letter from Naval Academy in regards to football my sophmore year of high school, but messed up my back my junior season. I graduated HS around the time of Top Gun, but with 20/400 vision there was no way they would allow me to fly -no matter how many strings he tried to pull. So I went in for Nuclear Power propulsion. Unfortunately, I got sick prior to going in, My ears perforated on flight to Orlando, and then I couldnt go subs, or much else that I wanted to do. THey wanted me to go aboard ships, but I had a fear of ships as I thought they were rubber ducks in such a big ocean so I withdrew with an Honorable discharge. THere have been times I have regretted that decision, but I have a beautiful family, and have been too blessed to look back. So, this was a wonderful weekend that I enjoyed immensely with the family. I would highly suggest it to anyone.

Well, this was a blast. I wish I would have been able to get pics in the CMH Museum, but the glare and having to keep a hold of the kids kept me from it. Every recipient is in there with story, and copy of official decree recognizing their incredible feats of heroism.

We also took ferry to FT Sumter and I will get those up one day in the future.

THis pictoral captures a lot of the tour, but it also missed a lot. Its amazing how large she was and only a portion of the ship was open. She's 882 ft long.

I hope you enjoy at least a fraction as much as the family and I did.

Great pics, thanks for sharing. I love touring Navy vessels as a kid and still do to this day. The F-14 and the Corsair have to be my favorite era planes of all time. There is a squad of WWII planes that fly out of Torrance,CA airport. You can distinctly hear the Corsair out of the Mustangs and Lightings when they fly over my house.

Great pictures! Thank you for sharing them. Ditto to what Bryan said.

I especially appreciate the photos taken inside the vessel. These are things we never see. The menu sounded good.

Great trip for you and the family (give them a hi from me). Brings back lots of memories, i haven't been on a naval vessel since being stationed on one back in the day.

Thank you all. This may be my best thread ive ever done.

The menu does look great and its healthy. I like how lunch was called dinner and todays dinner was supper like when I was a kid.

The also had midrats which was midnight rations.

Thanks for sharing...nice pix. It's a shame there isn't a single Essex-class carrier preserved in it's original WWII configuration. CV-10 served with great distinction!!! Best to all who served with her.

Great post/pics T !
I really enjoyed them, and thanks for taking the time to share them with us:thumbup:

T,

Thanks for sharing this with us. Looks like a great experience for all ages. Love the Warbirds.

I worked there for 12 years. I personally took it on myself to repaint the machine shop and straighten it up. I had some cool displays showing the huge tooling that was used in that lathe. I place all of the cannons out there on the waterfront and helped with the big sub out front. I also helped to build the Viet Nam support base. Lot's of fond memories. I left to go full time as a maker in 2003. My wife still works in the Ship's Store as one of the managers. Give me a shout if you ever come back. I can hook you up with free passes.

Great pix! Thank you for posting them here.
I've not had the pleasure of touring any military ship, but now after seeing your pix, I think that I have to put this on the list. :)

Awesome pics....I've spent a lot of time on the Lexington in Corpus...shed a few tears with some old timers....seeing the sleeping areas affirms my dexision to go Army though

Thanks for sharing. Those naval ships are amazing. I toured the Missouri when it was docked in Tacoma back in the 60s and it defiantly left an impression. What kind of machinery would it take to turn, bore and rifle those 16" guns?

Man that is amazing!!!! What a feat of human engineering! Those things are incredible. Thanks for sharing your trip Trev :)

I served in the Marine Detachment aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kittyhawk CV-63. Honestly, that was my favorite part of my service. Although the Kittyhawk was more modern in several ways, your photo essay of the Yorktown brought back a lot of great memories. Thanks for posting it.
