Hello all:

I recently moved to a small village which is well known as being Bear country. In the town and out on the trails I have spotted Bear a few times (the ones I have seen were huge) and were sometimes close. I have seen them in my back garden twice (after dark, when taking the Dog out for a walk) Attacks (although rare) do happen, what would you recommend to carry, if you were not a hunter and had no prior experience, for use in an emergency only, only if attacked?

Or would a knife not be of much use (if attacked by a Bear) let me know your thoughts please..................

I have a Spyderco Harpy that I carry when out on my sailboat, but doubt that it would be of much use against a Bear attack. I could likely get away with carrying a fixed blade without drawing drawing too much attention, although I would prefer to carry something that was out of sight.

Thank you all for any feedback. I joined here a few weeks ago because I collect small pen kniives, but seem to have accumulated a few fixed blade knives as well (some I have yet to identify)

Cheers

Welcome to Bladeforums, David.

This topic comes up with fair frequency. To find previous threads on this topic, do this:

Enter "bear" with no quotes as the search term.
Select "Thread titles only"

Aside from the nauseatingly huge number of posts about "Bear Grylls", you will find a number about bears and bear attacks. Those usually devolve into whether a knife is good for bear defence or not.

Enjoy and welcome aboard.

Thanks knarfeng. I use many vBulletin forums, and should have known better than posting before doing a search. I was thinking that this would be a rare topic (my bad I am thinking)
