Has anyone owned a Toyota diesel pick up? Last week I bought this 1882 truck. I have a F150 4x4 and have been looking for a small truck that gets good milage to use a daily driver. As far as I can tell it gets about 34 MPG around town. For $1300 I got this clean one owner truck, the low milage spare engine in the back and three parts trucks. I do not have room for the extra trucks so I will probably part them out. If I had time I would fix one of them up to run on veggie fuel. I can see keeping this truck for a long time.

Toyota makes all kinds of great diesel powered vehicles, they just don't sell them in the US

I saw a diesel Datsun truck just today...never knew they sold them in the states years ago. Now I need to find one since the big car companies can't/won't bring a small truck to the US.

They are rare gems, I was to be gifted with one for my sixteenth birthday, but it was not to be and we left not only the country, but the continent. My older sibling had picked up his second Toyota diesel pickup which he had intended to modify, lost interest and bought a Rover instead. Such was my opening to acquire one for myself rather than constantly borrowing his. I learned to drive in one, on rough roads and in Johannesburg traffic. Fully able to carry a load or use as a commuter vehicle, no slouch on acceleration either due to the light kerb weight.

The "spare" Toyota my brother had imported (at some expense) had the immediate benefits of being diesel (my brother and I having formed an affinity for that form of combustion) and the added benefit that Japanese domestic use cars can be had cheaply after a 100K miles for a steal. In addition, they already had the steering wheel on the "correct" side of the car (right hand drive). If I go back to South Africa as I have planned to do (spouse permitting, that is), I'll no doubt pick up where I left off with a slighter newer version of my ideal, a somewhat worn Toyota diesel pickup truck. Many fond memories.

Wow that is an amazing video. The old guy I bought these trucks from bought two of them new.One he drove 280,000 miles and parked it.The one I am driving just turned over 160,000 but was towed over 50,000 miles behind a motor home . This guy is moving into a retirement community and has acres of old toys. He had a thing for diesel trucks and I am considering buying a small Mazda diesel truck he has that is a few years newer than my Toyota. It only has 70,000 miles on it.

Diesel Toyota trucks are great.

I have had my 4x4 turbo-diesel Hilux Surf for a few years now and it is bombproof. I drive all over my hilly ranch with it. Not a pickup but otherwise the same as the other Hilux's.

My old 5spd Toyota Landcruiser HJ-60 with a 4.0 litre, 6 cylinder 2H diesel engine.

280,000 km and the engine was never touched (only oil changes). I finally ended up selling it only as the body was giving out, I sold it for twice what I paid in less than an hour online, luckily the new owner (who already owned 13 of them) only wanted it for the engine. I was sad to see it go!

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Toyota diesel, best vehicle I have ever owned.

Re: the Top Gear video. Love the show, neat truck with amazing durability.

But is that guy like twelve feet tall? He's driving practically in the fetal position. Would love to see his wife, kids, and dog ride in there with him too. :)

I honestly don't know. Clarkson is big (6'6'') but he's not THAT big. Maybe the seat's stuck.

Another thing that would be interesting, run a new Toyota Tacoma and Tundra through the same tests and see if "they still make 'em like they used to." :)

My sister works in the Solomons, roads aren't up to much. One of her staff used to take the HiLux home with him. After the second axle broke she went with him to his village. Turned out he was trying to turn a jungle trail into a road by driving up and down it. The first few runs had smashed the plant life out of the way, after that he was simply churning up the mud. I guess that fact that it used to get him home was the plus point. Oh, and a local mechanic could fix it and that parts were available in a developing country.
