Too Pretty To Use Syndrome. A customer will pass on a 800 grit hand finished blade and pay the same money for one with a ground 320 grit or a sandblasted finish. Do folks not realize in a year or so of hard use they will look almost exactly the same. To me, a knife is a lot like a rifle. You use it, take care of it, and years down the road it still looks like a classy weapon with some character marks on her. A using knife is a using knife, whichever way it starts out. Does the general public seem to equate " high performance" with very plainly finished knives? Why do people assume that a very clean, beautifully finished knife is more delicate than a plain jane knife? Kinda like buying a new truck with a primer coat or getting married to an ugly woman on purpose. Go figure. Thank ya'll for letting me rant. Hell, I probably don't know what I'm talking about anyway. mike

ROFLOL!!!

"Yep. She's a good using wife." :p

I have a friend that bought a BMW 535 a while back. He got it in gold which was not his favorite color option. He liked green, he got gold. Why? "The gold always looks clean. You can go two months without washing it and no one can tell. The green looks dirty as soon as you drive it out of the car wash." It's true, too. I have a green Gr. Cherokee. Trust me, you know when I've been out in the rain. Dirt really stand out on that color.

I wash my Jeep as often as I have to to keep it looking nice. I take the extra steps. I like maintaining my Jeep. I like babying it. I also use it. I hve it specifically so I won't get trapped in the kaolin mines where I collect my research samples. Kaolin is a white clay that sticks to everything. Especially dark green jeeps. I use it. I clean it. I show it off.

My friend, well he just likes people to see he owns a BMW.

I know what you mean Mike. I have a good customer (now a good friend) from East Texas who likes rustic looking knives. He drove over here one day for a visit and asked if I had any knives that weren't spoken for. I showed him one with clean 600 grit finish and a Sambar stag handle.

He really liked the knife and I could tell that he was strongly considering buying it, but there seemed to be something bothering him. When asked about it, he said it was too pretty. He wanted something he wouldn't feel bad about using.

I told him to follow me. I washed it down real good with hot soapy water to get all the oil off the blade, then put it in a bucket of Clorox bleach till it turned and got some pitting in it. Then I took a small hammer and put some dings in the stag handle. He was delighted and started fanning money out on the table like he was dealing a hand of cards.

If someone finds an answer for this dilemma, please let me know asap!!!!!!!!!!

I remember maybe five years ago when ripped jeans were fashionable I got a J. Crew catalog with regular jeans for $40, and ones with a slashed knee for $45. Go figure.

Hi.

My name is Greg.

(crowd) "Hi, Greg."

I'm a TPTU-olic. I know, admitting is the first step towards recovery...

I'm trying, I'm really trying. It's stupid, I've had a Cold Steel Voyager and a Fallkniven WM-1 with Micarta Handles for about three years. I really like the Fallkniven, and the Cold steel is so-so. But every task I come upon, I say "this isn't worthy of using my Fallkniven. I'll save it for a better task."

Help me!

P.S. Terry, you keep my Bowie out of that bleach water! I promise I'll change! LOL

Too late Greg.

Oh well, you can spray a little WD-40 on it and it'll be alright. Hey, do you still want that presentation grade wood for the handle, or do you think it might be too pretty? Maybe a hickory hammer handle?

Thats a funny one. I liked that. Insert laugh here. I would go for the pine burl for it myself.

Arrrrggghhhhh!!! LOL!!!!!

Terry, I guess we'll just wrap some duct tape around the tang and call it quits...

Cured through shock therapy. Hope there won't be an additional therapeutic charge tacked onto that knife.

Man Terry that's just plain COLD :) Bet you not even gonna send him that one! I mean get his hopes up, and then he gets a purty knife!!

BTW nice looking knife! :D :D

Of topic here, but I just wanted to say that it is good to see you back Paul. I have noticed a few posts from you lately, but I thought you were gone. Welcome back.

Sometimes rustic is just more appealing. I have 65 Mustang that was passed on to me from my Father. The car sat under a pine tree uncovered for 5 years. You can guess what the paint looked like.I sanded the car a painted it primer gray. I kept this way for 10 years. One Day a friend decided we should paint the car. Needless to say it looked brand new .... I hated it.The next week I roughed up the paint and shot it with a coat of flat black and i fell in love with the car all over again.

Hey Paul. Yep, that's the one he'll be getting.

But don't worry. There's really not a speck of rust on it. It's clean as a whistle. I took a shot of the blade, then a pic of some rusty steel plate, then used my photo editing software to paint rust on the blade pic.

I've worked way too hard on that puppy to rust it for real. :D

Hey, that's a good idea about the pine burl Jerry! Yellow pine is light weight, inexpensive, and readily available here in the south. Thanks for the tip. I'm sure Greg will be delighted. ;)

Pine burl is too pretentious; I'll stick to duct tape for this baby... Ah, I can see it now. A REAL user!

Hey Terry, I didn’t know your were offering the Duct tape and rust option. I got screwed. LOL

Mines just too fancy, you know wood handle and all.

Happy Camper
LOL. Just what part of the duck did that tape come off of? Too funny
