A lot has been said before about how useless the TOPS Tracker is unless the blade is re-ground.
People referring to it as no more than a micarta handled club!!!
Well I was just wondering if the new smaller 3/16" thick model would be an improvement,I suspect it would.
I'd like to hear what you guys think !!!!

I wouldn't say it's 'useless' it will do all that it's supposed to just not as efficiently as the Beck or Linger version. I haven't checked out the smaller Tracker yet but seeing from the photos, it doesn't look like it has been improved in any way.

You cut with the edge so its cross section tends to be vastly more influential than the spine thickness.

I just imagined with the spine being thinner to start with that the taper to the edge would be greater.
Are you saying it would be no better then ?

You can't really make that assumption no. There are a lot of fairly thin knives with fairly thick edges.

The biggest complaint i hear about the tracker is that it's too thick.the tracker II is thinned down from 1/4'' to 3/16''.So it's about the thickness of a cold steel SRK.

When people are discussing the Tracker and having it reworked to increase the performance they get the edge thickness reduced. This can have a massive effect on cutting and chopping ability, from 50-100% isn't uncommon.

Cliff brings up a great point about having the edges reworked. To me it seems if they reworked the edges and teeth on the current tracker it would have made more sense. It would have been easy to find how what the edges/teeth should have been changed to due to the amount of conversation online about this style knife. Making a smaller version of a knife that has some issues doesn't make it better. In this case I think it created another problem. Making it smaller took some weight away from it. This will probably cause the hatchet blade to be less effective. Just my honest opinion.

That's an impressive increase!!!!

Indeed, it comes from the fact that the edge thickness is usually 2-3 times what it needs to be and the angle can usually be cut in half as well. You can do it yourself by hand, but unless you have power equipment it will take awhile on a knife of that size, about a half an hour or so.

To me it seems if they reworked the edges and teeth on the current tracker it would have made more sense.

This would mean they would have had to admit the first one was severely flawed but this way they get to sell two patterns.
