Tracking the activity of a wireless internet connection?

So I'm on my laptop via a wireless network set up at work. My work is a very PC kind of place and they frown upon message boards (esp knife boards, lol) as well as a paintball message board I frequent.

I know if I access these sites on their hardwired computer they can track where I've been, but can they do it on my wireless laptop?

Just curious, thanks. I dont feel like getting yelled at for looking at knives during the day.

Thanks.

They should be able to track it if you are connecting to their wireless network.

I sey-up wireless and hardwired networks as part of my work. Yep, they can track it just like on a wired net.

Sorry for the bad news.

Jon

Assuming that the wireless network you're tapping belongs to your employeer, then yes it is subject to the same tracking and blocking and filtering that your company's wired network is.

However, if the wireless network you're using is coming from the coffee shop next door (or some such thing), then no. The owner of that network could track you, but not your company.

Funny you mention that Gollnick, as today a store in the same strip just got a wireless setup. Only problem is that through all the walls it is extremely slow.

Other agents in the office use the company's connection for all kinds of stuff. I dont use it when the phones are busy and I get all my work done. I dont think they'll have too much of an issue with it as long as it doesn't cause problems with me getting my work done. Everyone else does it too and they dont mind, but I'm new and don't feel like getting on anyones bad side just yet. :)

Even if you are using an outside connection, it is still possible to monitor traffic with the right software and wireless card in promiscuous mode, assuming the connection is not encrypted. It isn't too hard to capture packets floating through the air. There are a number of free programs that will do it.

Wow, crazy stuff.

I dont think they really mind, I was just curious. Thanks for the input.
