I've gone a couple of times with our older dog to introduction tracking seminars, he kinda got it, but tended to ignore the scent and "look" for objects instead.
The wife has taken our youngest dog this summer to two classes (about 8 or ten sessions total) of tracking and they did pretty well. So yesterday we decided to give him a track to do.
She went to the town common which because of the weather is little bits of grass but mostly rain slicked ice field crossed by asphalt paths. There where several other dogs and people out at the time. Mid 30's and a stiff breeze blowing.
I showed up about 10 minutes later with "the baby" just as she finished her track. She put the tracking harness on him and told him to go track. He took off without hesitation and hammered into the harness. The course had four corners and 5 legs. maybe 400 or 500 yards total. and on most corners he nailed them, on two he had to "cast around" circling followed by cone shaped weaving to get back on the sent.
Pretty amazing what dogs can do! If you have the time and inclination to go to tracking school with your dog I'd reccommend it.
