A good time was had by all. You'll see Mark and Carl working on some low layer damascus, then mugging for the camera, then working on some cable which didn't want to cooperate. On Saturday, I talked Dann and his son through forging their first knives. They did outstanding, I think I learned more by teaching them, than they did. The last one just shows what a beautiful place Trackrock is, can't wait to go back!

I am green with envy, I got to get to the next one. You know the Bill Moran school is probably national accredited being assocaited with the college...meaning the army would pay 100% tuition for us. Just got to find time to get away.

Frank,
You're right about the ABS School. I took the Handles & Guards class a few years back and did just that. You have to do some talking at the Education Center at first, but it's all legit!

I just got to find the time then, I guess you got to take the intro before anything else. Do you know of any others schools that are eligible?

I assume the one in NC would be. (Montgomery CC I think) Finding the time is the hard part. I never took the Intro Class, in fact I didn't know that you were supposed to until I showed up for Handles and Guards. I still want to take Intro, but 3 weeks are hard to find! There is that Sierra Forge and Fire out in CA, but I don't think it's aligned with any college.
Part of what sold it to the education counselor when I did it was that in theory, the ABS classes lead to a "degree or certificate" that being a Journeysmith rating. So maybe the NC one wouldn't work, not sure now that I'm really thinking about it. I only got 50% paid for as an officer. Geez, the clothing allowance, higher BAS and now this!!!

Ryan:

Thanks for posting the pics........ Like the Dummy that I am, I went off and left my camera at home.

It was sure nice meeting you. You seem to have a natural blend with the "heat", "steel", hammer", and "anvil"........ Keep it up......... You are going places............

I also watched you instructing a "Newbie"........... Its amazing what one can learn just by teaching others.

Robert

P.S............... Thank you for your military service.........You are a part of what helps this country maintain its wonderful freedoms........

Robert,
It was great meeting you as well. I can't wait to see that bowie once the "Alabama Chrome" handle is replaced. All your stuff looked great, but something about that one, I just had to keep picking it up!

I, for one, don't plan on missing another Trackrock event as long as Uncle Sam will keep me in GA.

Damn you O's got it hard. You know when I got to the Regt, as a pvt your life was a living hell until you got your tab, but I wouldn't have wanted to be a platoon ldr either, the senior O's treated them like kids. I guess that is part of growing up...you are always cherry at something.

Yep, I am one of those also. But I want to be challenged, in knifemaking, I think that I will be for many years.

I see my 2 favorite Trackrock girls!!!
Man I wish I could have made it but well....theres always next time.
I heat treated 4 knives in honor of the event instead :)

Hey you guys,
Robert's right. Brian has a very natural talent for teaching and confidence building. The two fellas he's instructing are father and son. They both did very well with their first forging experience. You folks that haven't met Brian, well......he's one of those guys you would want to know. He kindly didn't mention that it was "moon lit" welding around 1:30 am. Sometimes you just can't quit!

Thank you for coming Brian (and all the rest of you "Iron Heads"). I had a really great time. We had several new faces there and I hope I see them again.

Thanks for sharing the pics Brian.

Now if we can just get Robert to pick up a hammer......................

hey Crex............. I hate I couldnt come down. Spring my friend!!! Soon, I'll be dragging my little girl down for the afternoon :) Guess I should wait till she is born huh?

Had a great time,

It was kinda sad for me though. May have been my last Trackrock for some time to come depending on what happens with me moving.

I'll try my best to coincide my visits back to the East coast with the hammer-in reguardless.

Enjoyed getting to meet RYAN , not Brian :) And Rick.

Wish you could have drug your sorry butt down for at least a day trip Brian.

I'm sure Ken has a ton of pictures, maybe he can add to this thread.

Wish I could have made it but busy at the farm this time of year, May be next time. Looks like you all had a great time.

Larry

Hey guys! Just wanted to add my thanks to everybody for the great time we had there. Carl, Mark and John worked their butts off to make everything enjoyable and informative. The whole bunch couldn't have been more friendly and willing to teach. (They even donated enough air for my mattress so my wife and I could sleep comfortable in camp.) Lunch was great and it's high point may have been Sandy's discourse on plum eating bears and their "polka dotted poop". Meeting Sandy and talking leather was, of course, a real highlight. I didn't pound any steel this year, but I'm now activily seeking an anvil and tools! All in all, it just reaffirmed the great bunch of people involved in our craft.
Rick

I know I enjoyed myself, I was sorry to have to leave saturday, but I'll try to be back in the spring.

It was great meeting everybody, you guys are great.

Tony

Hey Tony:

Glad you were feeling better...........Here is hoping you continue to get your health back where it needs to be.

I talked Mark out of a piece of that 52100. Gonna give it a try when I feel brave enough.

You folks that didn't get a chance to attend, you missed a treat with Rick Lowe's stuff. Great blades, excellent filework, painstaking attention to detail, and some of the best leatherwork I've seen in quite some time.

Robert

Talk to her Brian, she'll be listening on some level.
Was a good weekend.
Sorry Ryan, no excuse, just not good with names.
