I have been thinking about knives like that for a long time. A simple curly maple handle, stainless (dislike brass) pins, rough forge finish, some leather accents on the handle. I didn't know they were called trade knives. Love em to death. And looks like I don't have to lose an arm and a leg too.

I like especially the cactus rose / gib guinard (sp?) type but don't think I can afford them right now.

Anyone know how well the 10XX series steel in used in those trade knives perform? I could really do with a 5.5" flat ground drop point for my guiding work, plus that forged finish with that patina wont rust as easily as my satin finish carbon steel.

How sharp? How's the edge holding?

Any other websites? Recommended makers?

I like the $30 something pricetag. Really nice.

Thanks,

Well, I found out a little bit more about them but not much. Montana Americana make their own knives, usually out of 3/32 but will do 1/8 on request. I don't think they're actually trade knives but close enough for me.
Most of the others are made by Dean Oliver, whoever he may be, I did a search and found nothing about him so I presume he does'nt have a website. Interestingly enough, Montana Americana seem to produce most of the sheaths for all of them.
In knifeforums a member said they had the Metis knife and loved it. Somebody in another forum, I can't remember which, said he had the English Scalping Knife and said something to the effect of don't take any notice of the price tag the fit and finish befit a much more expensive knife. There is one thread in here (search under French Trade and it should show up)where a fella bought the French Trade knives from Two Hawks and he was pleased. But other than that I know nothing about them and what I did find out was just a couple of lines.
Once my credit card recovers from Christmas I'll order a couple from Track of the Wolf and let you know how they go. Thanks, Rod.

Keep us posted. I'm interested in the Metis and the lewis and clark repro. I wonder if Montana will cater to mods? I would really like full flat ground and a blade 1.4inches wide. I find that wide blades are useful for camp work.

I'm thinking that with a price tag under $50 (plus sheath), I could afford to buy some rawhide and try my hand and making some wrappings on the handles.

Anyone know where I can score some rawhide (castoffs or small pieces - enough for one handle) and brass tacks?

Thanks,
