I did a little knife trading today and ended up with these two knives.
One is a large folding hunter marked "Golden Rule Chicago" and the other is a Schrade Barlow with scrolling on the bolsters.
I had been looking for this type Schrade because my understanding is it was made the same as the 1975 Russell knives.
The Golden Rule I know very little about except for people and internet tell me it was made in the 1920's or prior.
Any info on either is appreciated but I really dig them :) My friend had the Golden Rule and it came with brown celluloid handles that had shrunk up badly so he put the stag on it. Probably hurts the value but I like the looks.

The Schrade looks like a 206, made from 1976-1983. I don't know anything about the Golden Rule but it sure looks nice!

The blade is marked Schrade 205 I didn't know how long this model was made so thank u :)
The Golden Rule is a mystery to me. Most things I find online shows them as a maker of "Nudie" knives with clear handles. Haven't found ANY with plain brown celluloid like this one originally had nor have i found any large hunters they made. I may be wrong but I'm guessing this knife to be fairly rare. Don't know if it's desirable but I think it is rare.

Congratulations on our Scrolled Schrade! I also like seeing stag handles. Thanks for posting photos.

Schrade made the Russell 100 year, 1875-1975 Commemorative replica Barlow, using the pattern Schrade called the Grand Dads Barlow, model 206, with Delrin handles and Stain Resistant blade steel.

Schrade just swapped the bolsters, tang stamp and blade etch, the rest of the "Russell" and the light scaled "Grand Dad's" use the same pattern and materials. The Schrade Russell bolsters are quite different than the Originals. The Schrade is not built on a Russell pattern imo

There are also 206's with scrolled Brass bolsters and dark handle scales. The following catalog page says they were made to Commemorate the invention of the Barlow by an American Civil War General, which is not accurate. The Barlow was invented in England in the 1600's

I have never held a Schrade 206 next to an Original Russell Barlow, so not sure how alike they are. Here is a photo that has both your 206 and a straight tang stamp Russell (before 1933 merger with Harrington) :

and here is a google on Golden Rule Coke Bottle:
GOLDEN RULE CUTLERY CO. (G.R.C.) Coke Bottle Knife, Chicago, Illinois, ca. 1911-1921. 9" long opened and 4 1/2" blade.

The Golden Rule looked exactly like the one Jon posted originally. No clear handles with pictures just brown celluloid that had shrunk. I wonder if this knife was made before they went the picture knife route or perhaps AFTER that fad started dying?

The Golden Rule is unbelievably HUGE but fairly comfortable in the pocket. I normally carry a Barlow or a pen knife but other than the weight I like this old Coke Bottle very much. If worse comes to worse I think u could knock someone out with it :) Golden Rule was apparently only known for gimmick novelty knives in their day but I'm here to tell ya that the steel in this sucker is top notch. Sharpens up to razor sharpness and is THICK and strong. This may have been a gimmick knife it it's day but it is anything but junk.

Sounds like a handy camp knife, the size of a Granddaddy Barlow. The one I posted was listed as having wood handles, not celluloid, but Ive only seen a picture. And your stag handles are fantastic!. I would be curious to know how much your knives weigh, that is a useful "size" reference for me.

Example, 4 of my 2 blade 3.5" closed, regular sized, aka small, Barlows weigh 72 grams, a GEC with wood handles, a Remington with bone handles, a Boker with Delrin handles, and a Camillus with delrin handles. My heaviest 2 blade Barlow is a 79 gram, bone handled Russell. I would be curious also to know what your Schrade weighs..

And thanks again for posting photos, enjoy!

I have the S.C.C. 206, Jon. My kitchen scale reads 81 grams. Always willing to help with your Barlow project.
A pic in every post. Even if its a bad one?

Love the knife but loathe the "cream sickle " orange scales. Think I'll dye them. Navy blue or British racing green?

I'd love to see pictures if you decide to try this. I have a 206 as well and have never warmed up to the funny lookin' scales. A different color might be enough for it to get some pocket time finally.
