Well my father in law knew i was looking for an axe and he found one in a hauling job. As it turns out he really likes my BBQ, so he said he would trade me a rib dinner for the axe. That was before we knew the axe was 100 yeas old or so from my research. hahah

Well lets get to the pics. The head still needs some work, but it is getting there. Let me know what you guys think and any tips or comments are always welcome. First post on BF, so sorry if i screwed anything up.

This looks to be a good example of what happens when a power grinder is used to maintain axe blades. Seems to me there is a considerable amount of blade gone missing (ground off) at both ends. Would have required a lot of effort to remove that much metal with a file!

Well it still seems to be fairly hard it took some effort with a file to work the edge a little.

I will try to take some close up pics of the edge so you guys can see it. It seems that someone didn't take the best of care of it, but I couldn't beat the price.

Oftentimes the weight of the head will be stamped on it somewhere. Something like 4 (4 lb) or 3 2 (which would be 3 2/4 lb). You can compare this to what the actual weight is. As long as there is some tempered metal left to work with the axe is not dead, but the blade profile will be rather obtuse and relegate the tool for use as a splitter and not so much a chopper.

I measured the thickness at the widest point on the bevel and it is .34 inches.
