I've never been to a major knife show but am planning on going to one in a few weeks. I have a few knives I would like to trade. What are the protocols for trading with dealers at a show? Are most of them open to trades, or do they only want cash? The knives that I have in mind for trade are quality items in the $300-700 range, not junk.

Nothing more than walking up and asking. Best thing to do is look at what the dealer is selling, and ask those that are selling knives similiar to what you have in your collection. If they are willing, you've got yourself a deal.

Several dealers would be willing to take trade, if they can easily turn a profit. They'll make sure they don't lose out on the deal. I've traded production knives for a while now, and I always end up on the lower end of the bargain, but then again, it's a lot easier than coming up with cash!:D Try to find a dealer with similar styles and price range, as they tend to know more about the value of comparable knives. Don't be afraid to talk up your knives, i.e. tell them about the maker, and where you see their knives. Show you have knowledge as well, and they will respect that. Good luck!

Generally I open by asking, simply, "Do you take trades?" They'll always ask to see what you have, because they're looking for a deal as well.
