Trading in the BK-16 for a BK-17?

Well, I just got my new BK-16 last week and love it. I have yet to take it outside and use it on anything. It's basically just been here in my study room, next to my computer desk, where I'll pick it up here and there and slice some paper, haha. It's a great knife and I love everything about it. I truly do.

With that being said, I think I might have found a new love. My brother-in-law just a got a BK-17 a few days ago and yesterday was the first time I got to handle it and use it outside. I love it! :D I was unsure about the clip-point design, but after seeing the torture he put that knife through (along with all the new knives he buys), I was completely sold. That tip was solid as a rock! I made some traps with it, feather-sticking was easy as anything, and I'll hopefully be putting it through it's paces with some winter camping soon.

I guess I have to be a paying member of this site to post in the trade forums, otherwise I'd be asking on there. Would it better for me to trade my BK-16 for a 17, or should I just keep my 16 and buy a 17?

Honestly, living so close to my brother-in-law has its pros and cons. The good side is that he is a knife nut and I'm always welcome to try out any one of his Beckers before purchasing my own. The down side to that is that every time I try any of his new Beckers, I immediately fall in love.

That's just how it is when you try different Beckers. Now you know why we all say you'll end up buying the entire line. You at least need to give that 16 an honest test drive. I know. You don't really want to mark it up do you? Lol. I'd really get some use out of that 16 before I traded it. Just buy a 17 if you like it.

I was thinking about taking my 16 out today since I have the day off. Now, if I wanted to trade it, I don't want to scuff up anything and keep it as the brand-new condition its in. I do have the 17 with me and that's coming outdoors with me for a few hours today.

How can you evaluate a knife without using it?

Use the 16 and 17 for the same tasks and see which one really performs better for you.

Besides, your 16 is not a collectors model or a safe queen. It's a user. Some scratches and scrapes won't hurt its value that much.

I have used the BK-16 extensively. My brother-in-law loaned me his for a few months where I got to beat on it and loved it.

I think, I just realized I liked the design of a sturdy clip point more. I love the 16, its a spectacular knife, I just wish I saw the 17 before buying my own 16.

Sounds like you have tried them both and prefer the 17. I say go for it. if it were me I would ad the 17 to the fam and keep the 16. But if you are not wanting both, then by all means trade (if you can find anyone willing to give up their 17 ;) )

Haha, that's probably going to be the hardest part. I don't think many will want to part with their 17's.

And, I didn't mean to say I had purchased my own BK-16. My wife had got it for me as a a late Christmas present. I was thinking of buying one and she went ahead and surprised me with it. I love her to death for it too!

I just wished I had fully gone through the line of knives before I got that one, lol. She already said she doesn't mind at all if I were to trade it or buy a new 17.

Yeah, sounds pretty straightforward. I mean, I like a drop point more than a clip point myself, but if the 17 does it for you, go for it.

Are there are members here willing to make a trade? Is there some place I can go to make that trade? (If this is against the rules, please let me know and I'll take this part down.)

If anything, I'll just buy one, but I figured if I could make a trade, make someone else happy, while saving everyone money...why not?

I believe you have to purchase a Basic membership or above to post in the trade forums:

I definitely prefer the 16 as it has much better cutting geometry. But if you want to pry a lot with your knife, the 17 MAY be stronger. Of course it has less material supporting from the spine because of the swedge. Ultimately I traded my 17 (for a 15) once I got my 16 - I like the 16 that much better as a knife.

I'm actually going to be purchasing a membership pretty soon. :p

Is there a way to delete this thread? Can a mod do it? Sorry, all of my questions have been answered and I don't want to break any rules.

I believe you can do so via the "Thread Tools" drop down at the top right of the thread.

There is nothing wrong with this thread.

I have a 16 and 17. Like them both and the both perform well, but I gave the 17 to the wife. She likes it more than me.

Yeah, I see a very simple solution to this problem. Go with your first thought and buy a 17 too.

Haha, I know. If I could, I'd have the entire line of Becker knives. 2 or 3 of each. But, right now, I'm a bit of a minimalist and I do use my blades heavy and often in the field.

Today, my brother-in-law and I again, put his BK-17 through a torture test including hammering the the point straight into oak. It withstood everything we threw at it and laughed in our faces, asking for more. That knife is a beast. Obviously, I'm not going to try the steel hatch of a naval submarine with the tip, but that point withstood every wood test we gave it and never warped once.

Plus, it reminds me of my grandfather's old clip point that was handed down to my brother and myself. I want something similar that I can use in the field. I'm going to pair it either with the BK-4 or their new Kukri. I haven't decided yet.

I have to ask... you mentioned that you like your blades longer when you're in Central America in a post in your other thread... so, what takes you to Central America?
