I recently had a not so smooth trade that I backed out of. There were a number of things that didn't go like a normal trade.

I think there should be a sticky in the Trading forum listing some do's and don't's for how to complete a successful trade.

I wrote in an email, what I consider a rough outline of trading and some items that I do, but are not required. (Not specifically highlighted.) It would be nice if we could turn it into a better howto. Break things down into Do's, Don'ts, optional, suggested.

---------------

Normally, the two users discuss the trade. I will often tell people if I think it's an even trade or discuss trade value. I try to discuss shipping before an agreement is made, that way one guy doesn't spend $24 on shipping and the other guy spends $4 on shipping. Both people need to agree to the trade. After it is discussed and both give a formal accept, "I am good with the trade." I normally try to make it clear, "I am okay with an even trade of your ___ for my ___." After that, you transfer addresses.

I typically send an email describing how I packed up the item, how I shipped it, the time I shipped it, if anything happened at the post office, and include the tracking number.

After I have the item in hand, I will send an email saying my opinion of the condition and usually end with saying "I am happy with the trade." To give them confirmation that they are likely to not have problems with me doing something stupid later and give them a little leverage if there's an argument.

Most people don't actually read the existing sticky'd threads as it is, unless it is quoted or they are directed to it.

There are quite a lot of sticky threads with plenty of suggestions on how to go about doing things. At some point though, people have to take some responsibility and do some research on who they are dealing with, and decide whether they are comfortable or not.
