Some recent posts have got me thinking

I have always admired the traditional blades I have seen people bring back from Africa (sub-Saharan Africa that is). Very unique and some of the handle work I've seen has been spectacular.

As I don't plan on going there soon, are there reputable sources in the western hemisphere for such items?

I have a really cool african knife given to me by a friend that did missionary work in Mali.

I can scan a pic' and send it to you if you would like to see it.

It is amazing what they did for the handle and sheath out of camel skin, and the blade was hand made from a scrap piece of bronze.

e-mail me at cybermonk2@juno.com if you would like to see a picture of it.

Incidentally, I had a chance to buy a spear off of a genuine tribesman in Tanzania's Masai Mara. The materials used were crap, as was the workmanship, but as a souvenir that would have been the bomb.

Didn't think it'd have made it through the customs though, and I suspect the old boy sold them by the dozen to gullible blade-happy tourists . Like me.
