I am planning on trying my hand at bowfishing, they only bow i currently have is a traditional that i shoot of the rest. It does not have any mounting holes so adding any different rest is not optional. Can any of you guys telll me if i can shoot fiberglass arrows of the shelf. Im kind of worried that the arrow string stopper may end up gouging my wood.

are you shooting a recurve that shoots center string or are you shooting around the bow?

there's a couple strap on tape on bow fishing rigs on the net so you don't have to drill holes in your bow. its a lot of fun, i shoot more frogs than carp tho.

the bow i use for bow fishing is an old (early 70s) bear Kodiak magnum,(that i shoot off the shelf). its drilled for a stabilizer. so i stuck a 5 inch stabilizer on it and hose clamped a zebco real with 75 lb cat fish line in it.

only paid 20.00 bucks for it but i've had no problem with the string stops gouging anything.

I've never had any trouble shooting solid glass arrows off the shelf, and, my line holder/reel(can't remember the name) is taped on. If you're concerned, you can glue some buckskin onto the shelf and the riser for protection. When it/if it gets tore up it can be replaced.

i'll double your money on that kodiak lol, if you seriously got it for 20 then you scored

the last one i have i fish with, so its not for sale. and YES i seriously got it for 20 bucks. matter of fact i've never gave more than 25 for any of the to many to count bear bows.

hit garage sales, especially during the week, man of the house is usually at work, and the wife/mother/sister could give a **** about some old bow. dam near every other bow you find in a garage or back room (not counting compounds) at least around here, is a bear Kodiak(usually green) or grizzly. i have a 50# bear-cat thats real nice to shoot, paid 20 bucks for it.

the ones you see on the bay usually don't sell for as much as you'd think.

oops, just turned around and saw an old bear 76r i got off of the bay, i did pay 65 for it, that was a special case, first real bow i ever had, got it in 76. broke it in 78, been looking for one ever since. had to have it.

You are one lucky man to find those bows for that price

I've got a kodiak magnum (48 inch length) that I paid about half what it was worth, but really wish I could find some 20$ bows like that.....sooner or later I will have to start looking again

And op, I have a fishing arrow that you attach the string either directly to the shaft for to the head, no slide or
Anything, it may just be because it is an old arrow, but you may look for one of those

the 48 is the super mag, not gonna find one for 20. i don't think they made very many of those. i've only run across a couple, cheapest i ever saw was 75 on a super mag. bear made bunches of kodiak mags and grizzlys.

i have got a few fish arrows with only one hole for attachment, i always drill another behind the fletch and run a line front to back and use a large snap link from the main line. you get a lot better flight, the string doesn't seem to pull off the flight as much. plus, if something gets snagged on the reel or bow the arrow doesn't come back point first. that actually happened to me, damn near fell out of the boat trying to get away from the arrow.

a dirty fish arrow can cause a bunch of infection with even a small cut, bow fishings fun but it can be dangerous if things go wrong.

got a plastic nock stuck in my palm once from a big carp flopping around in the bottom of my canoe when i tried to grab the arrow after pulling it into the boat. cut the hell out of my index finger pulling one in from the string/line i was using once too.

i use braided catfish line now. when i started i used 150# kite string. didn't work out, it had no stretch, lost an arrow and a huge carp. catfish line is the best i've found.
