Hi

I've been wanting myself a traditional (atleast traditional in means of materials) bowie, preferrably exposed full tang. It should be preferrably carbon steel (chop-capable) and being reasonably affordable so that you dare to actually use it. It should be big too! :D

There are plenty of affordable bowies, but they all are more or less those plastic / coated tacticals.

It doesn't need to be pretty, not polished, no fancy materials. Just good sized and rugged.

Am I on impossible mission?

Ka-Bar makes makes a line of hunters which includes a bowie. Stacked leather handle, mirror polish, very nice looking, and pretty cheap ($43.95 from AG Russell) so you don't have to be afraid to use it. I have that small hunter and it's pretty nice for about thirty bucks, haven't got the bowie yet but I'd imagine it's of decent quality. They're imported, I don't know if that matters to you, from Taiwan.

To go even cheaper, I got a Winchester Bowie for $25 expecting it to be total junk but it's actually not that bad. It's not great, but it works alright.

To answer your question, no, you are not on an impossible mission. You're not going to get the best knife in the world but you'll get decent one for about fifty bucks or so.

Do they still make a Western, or Colman/Western Bowie? Had one as a kid and loved it!

Classic look, rugged, full exposed tang, heavy, sounds like what you may be looking for.

Thanks for the imput. It doesn't need to be dirt cheap, but affordable. ;)

Von Temspky bowie is one attracting bowie, and it's exactly what I mean about the simple looks. I don't know how it performs, and there seems damn impossible to find (in europe).

edit: and they seem steap after many retailers (where originally half as cheap)
