I'm building a Bowie knife and am trying to find information on the construction of the type of sheath I see a lot in pictures of original Bowies.

Here's an image of the type I'm talking about.

I'm hoping some of you can help me out.

Does this type of shealth have a name?

Information on the construction of such a sheath.

Here's a picture of my knife which is still under construction.

I do Cowboy Action Shooting and I'm building this for my costume. So it's a show knife and not intended for extensive use. The blade is from an old flat spring out of a truck.

Here's a picture.

Thanks in advance.

Try Bruce Evans if his site is still up he may have a tutorial on making one.

Gary,

If you scroll up to the top of the page you will see a series of subjects. Click on "related" and it will take you to the sheath forum.

Hi Gary-- I often enjoy and learn from folks' questions, such as yours. They are apparently referred to as throat and tip sheaths. Here are a few links I ferreted out. Keep us posted on your progress! -- All the best, Phil

Hey Gary,

I'm in the beginning stages of doing the same project. A customer is asking for a Bowie and sheath for Civil War reenactments. The knife will not be the issue but a sheath will be. I'd love to see what you come up with.

Mike
