Lately I have been more and more interested in traditional outdoor related crafts....

Like, I saw Schwert's articles on braiding a Baldric for his Skookum, and I would like to learn more.

Nordic Dangler Sheaths, Braiding, Simple Woodworking....

For instance, what are good books about Swedish Style Carving?

My brother found these....

Swedish Carving Techniques by Wille Sundqvist
http://www.amazon.com/Swedish-Carvi...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1249321014&sr=1-1

Carving & Whittling: The Swedish Style [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)
by Gert Ljungberg and Inger A:son-Ljungberg
http://www.amazon.com/Carving-Whitt...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1249321014&sr=1-2

Do you think those are any good?

Any other suggestions?

Any other type of crafts that are along this vein?

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

Years ago I bought a book on carving and did a couple of the easyer carvings but most of what I carve now is what I have seen or read about in the survival and bushcraft manuels and books. The thing to do is get out and practice what you see your read and if you do it right and do not cut yourself great if you do cut yourslef then you know you might want to try that cutting part a different way or use a different grip on your knife stuff like that. Practice is the key to getting better at carving wood.

G'day Marion

If your interested, here's a few videos I took a couple of years ago, showing the carving of a combined chopping board/coolamon (for the camp kitchen) with a hatchet.

Marion, I don't know whether travelling is an option for you, if so you might want to check out www.northhousefolkschool.com , they are located in Grand Marais, MN and feature many courses on traditional Scandinavian crafts.

Thanks guys...

These are good ideas...

x39 - I just ran into the folk school the other day, on the web.

Mick - I will check those out.

Go to Woodcarving Illustrated.com, there is a lot of information on Swedish/Scandinavian style carving. There are also some videos on the site by Gene Messer who specializes in that type of carving.

Marion I agree with Dannyboy about the Wille Sundqvist book, but man has it gotten expensive...
I found a bunch of carving vids on youtube while looking at bushcraft stuff.

Actually, the Norwegian carved rosemaling, is generally called "karveskurd". Mind you, if you google that word, you're likely to come up with some Norwegian sites aswell.
