Traditional Jack Knife with Bottle Opener

Hello all!

Looking through some of the different threads here I've seen a number of traditional jack knife models that instead of a second blade have instead a bottle opener/screwdriver. I am a student who has the good fortune to be in a college town that has some distributors with awesome beer selections which my roommates and I regularly enjoy. As jwren pointed out in my last post about the peanut, my regular bottle opener is getting pretty worn down and I think picking up one of these traditional knives with a bottle opener might be a cool way to replace it. I definitely think it would be a neat weekend carry option.

If any of you know some models of these traditional knife/bottle openers that I described that are relatively easy to obtain I would appreciate it if you shared the maker names/models. Please don't recommend victorinox models, I already have a few of these (including the cadet) and am really thinking more of something with bone/wooden/stag handles. I don't have a ton of cash at the moment but I'm getting into traditionals these days and have quite a few modern folders I could trade/sell to get what I'm looking for. So the cheaper the better, but I would probably be willing to spend say maybe up to 75 bucks or so. I tend to prefer smaller knives, so 3 inches or under would be preferable but if these are only available as larger knives I would definitely still consider them. If you recommend a larger knife if you know the approximate weight I would appreciate that info as well. If any of you have experience with these knives and maybe know of one that works very well as a bottle opener I would love to know about that as well.

As always thanks for all your recommendations and shared wisdom!

I've been wanting one too. What you are thinking of is likely the 2011 Blade Forum Knife. We missed the boat on that one.

Keep a look out on ebay, you might find an older knife with one. Nobody is really making a current version of what you want.

Maybe a Rough Rider Camp Knife.... or a camp knife pattern, case might be making one.

Rough Rider will have a stockman with one soon...check out the RR thread toward the end for a pic.

Hmmm, can't really think of anything besides searching the big auction site for a used scout knife. Only other thing that comes to mind, and maybe it could be a novelty/talking point with your college friends is the GEC #28 French Kate.
Only 3 1/4" long, can also get some nice handle options. For some reason :D they seem to be in abundant supply.

Something like this? But it'll run more than 75 $

Jwren can you open bottles with the#28?

Was just going to edit in that I haven't actually used one for that purpose or even handled one for that matter. I assume it would work.....anyone have any direct experience opening bottles with a French Kate?
Does anyone here even own one?

Not really too interested in the leg knife, but that stockman is something exciting to look forward to. Thanks for the heads up!

Boker has a limited (500 worldwide, 250 in Europe, 250 in NA) camp knife in olive wood. Its the Evergreen series. They're over your $75 limit though. 3 1/2" closed, 2 1/2" main spear blade in 440c and a caplifter/bottle opener along with a corkscrew.

From their website...

The stockman is for sale now, google Rough Rider RR1356.

Here's another one, Rough Rider RR1291 Mini Scout Knife.

Edited to add, it is only 2 1/4 inches closed.

been searching for a 2011 for a while now, they turn up on the exchange every now and then but you got to be darn quick. Good luck.

Many fisherman's knives have bottle openers built into the disgorger/scaler blade. Might not be of interest to you, but I thought I'd mention it.

If I were looking for a Jack knife with a bottle opener...I'd use that as a good excuse to start looking around at antique shops, etc. For me, looking around at places like that is half the fun.

I've had good success searching online for " bottle opener knife" or something similar. Other places I have found old knives are gunshows, flea markets and antique stores. Good luck with your search.

The one on the left is a bay score. It was priced less than a cheap case of bottled beer.

The link Jack provided should give you plenty of options, here's a pic of a fishing knife Ed suggested, and also a old scout pattern, flea markets and garage sales have plenty of interesting old knives for cheap, I've taken home many nice knives for well under $10.
