Does anyone know why the traditional way to carry Khukuris is the odd upside down pointed to the left way like the pictures in Aunt Yangdus post Gorkha Visit? I've always wondered when I have seen pictures. It looks very awkward for drawing the Khukuri. There must be some efficient practical reason or they wouldn't carry them like that.

you grab the khukri handle with the right hand and the left hand grasps the top of the sheath. The blade is downward because the blade can cut though a sheath. If the khukri was blade uppermost, you would be forced to hold the sheath with the edge towards your palm.

Never draw a khukri with your fingers around the sheath, you only hold the sheath where the back of the blade is, never around to where the edge is.

Because in the pictures they are relaxed and if they had to use their khuks they would have them in their hands:)

The sheath is not held in place tightly by that sash. If you put your hand on the pommel, the blade and sheath easily rotate to the right making it easy to draw. If you carried it in that position, however, the chape of the sheath would poke a bloody hole in your left thigh or testicles. It might not look like a "tactical" way to carry it, but it works just fine and looks good too.
