This may not be the correct place for this if not please move...

I'm a fan of Case knives (well all knives in general) but primarily the ones with carbon steel blades. I live in a humid climate and have been storing my knives in small ziplock bags. I've been thinking of either adding a silica packet to each one or possible adding rice to soak up any moisture that may get in the bag.

Anyone have any other recommendations?

or any advice against either using a silica packet or rice?

Just slap some mineral oil on the blades if you are having an issue. I live in the same climate, and do nothing other than pull my knives out and check them once in a while. They are stored in a wooden box in the house where the A/C runs and pulls a lot of the moisture out of the air.

I tried the zip-lock bag trick with a pistol (Hi-Standard Sport King) I left at our country house durning the summer last year, and I noticed some rust. We did not run the A/C during the week and the humidity did cause the pistol to rust on the surface. So the bag along did not help the situation. I would think if you did add rice ect. I would keep it from getting into contact with the metal because if it touched I would think that would cause rust.

I do nothing special for my knives and I have never had a patina problem on my carbon knives unless I'm using them. I have not had one patina or pepper just from being in storage or from being in my pocket for that matter.

Slica but NO rice cause it will hold moisture and can cause rust.

I live near the ocean and recommend that you use wax. Johnstons floor wax, Automobile wax of any brand, the museums use Renaissance wax. Its the most expensive. Wipe your knives down with a microfiber cloth or old clean T-shirts is what I use. Then wax them up with another clean cloth, do a second coat. if you have a fondling session, repeat those two coats or come look/see every 3-4.

Here in tropical Singapore, humidity is ALWAYS upwards of 80% all year round. We sweat a lot around here but it doesn't cause a problem with rust on anything. Most times, I just give my metal items a wipedown with a dry cloth and it's all good.

I live on the beach in Florida and don't take any extra precautions with my knife storage. My Traditional Knives mostly stay in a wooden box that looks like a book, some just lay out all the time, never had a problem...
