Well, I finally suffered a backsliding moment and traded off some of my traditional guns for a, shudder, "black rifle." Trust me, it was painful parting with them. I'll probably get some just like them again down the road. I picked up a practically new Bushmaster AR-15 (M4 config) for nostalgia's sake and just cause I've been wanting one in a pre-ban config just on general principle. That and with the power shift in the Congress and Senate I may not be able to get one later. A little defiance on my part too.
The one fellow from work is leaving this weekend for a job in Phoenix, AZ on the police force. He's also the one who was with the early stages of Stryker in the Army. A little while back he picked up a FN PS-90. His dad has a place outside San Antonio near Poteet where he shoots. Naturally, we all got together there today for a final bit of shooting.
To make it even worse, another young fellow from work who another reprobate and myself have been corrupting decided to buy his second gun. His first he bought from my fellow reprobate's son. It is a Remington 7mm Mag. This kid, Mike, fell in love with it, and shot it well, his first trip out. It is however, synthetic stocked and he likes em that way. So before we went shooting, four of us, including Mike show up at the gun shop we've been taking him too. It always helps to have a support group with you when you are buying a gun. Okay, more like cheerleaders going, "YEAH MAN! Go for it!" Mike picks up one of those new Mossberg Tactical (doesn't the word just make you cringe) Persuaders. The ones with the CAR-15 type sliding stock and an ammo carrier on the side of it.
Where am I going with this and how does it relate to traditional knives? I'm getting to that.
While there was a single shot shotgun, my 20 Gauge Spanish double, and a Marlin .30-30 there, Tattykill weapons were more in abundance and shot. There was my AR, my mutt Mossberg with a synthetic stock (standard type) and standard wood forearm under a riot barrel, and my Taurus PT-100 semi-auto, Ben's (the guy leaving) PS-90, and Mike's new Tattykil shotgun. Here in the midst of all this stuff on my hip I'm wearing my Shadowknife's fixed blade with the smooth bone handle in its leather sheath.
EVERYBODY, had to check out that knife and EVERYBODY loved it! They loved the look, the way it was made, and the size of it. Then my Case mini-trapper got passed around when we sitting around afterwards. In the midst of all the "kewl" tattykill shooting irons a couple of traditional knives got some very appreciative attention. The fixed blade especially. It is kinda nice to see that kind of wow factor being shown for traditional knives even with some young guys who are still at that black guns rule phase. Maybe there's hope yet.
Oh yeah, and Mike has indicated he'd like to go hunting sometime. A good chance to point him towards a good traditional knife for the job.
