Hello. Still semi new to the forums and seeking some advice. I have recently inherited a large collection of traditional slip joint knives. What is the best source to find values? Also, best source to find out how to clean up these knives? Sorry if this is the wrong thread. Thanks for all the help.

Since you payed for a Gold membership you are allowed to ask here. There is a sub-forum for Traditionals and Bernard Levine's sub-forum to help identify knives also. I would recommend some good pictures and give as much information as you can and post there are lots of very knowledgeable folks on here that are usually helpful. Welcome to the forums and good luck.

I might add, if you are able to identify a knife with certainty, head over to the appropriate exchange section and search it for past sales. That usually gives a good starring point for the value.

Also...do not "clean" vintage knoves unless you know what you are doing. Can't tell you how many y absutely ruined vintage knives I've seen.

People take a sledge hammer to a sewing needle, so to speak.

I appreciate the advice. Definitely want to learn what I’m doing or have someone that knows more do it for me. Many have quite a bit of rust on them.

Rust will certainly decrease the value, especially if it is more than light surface rust! But as previously advised, don't jump in and start cleaning them. Seek expert advice on cleaning, sometimes even expert cleaning can reduce value, depending on the specific knife and circumstances.

I have an EXTENSIVE library of books on almost all known types of knives and makes from all over the world. I would always be willing to lend a hand if need be.

I’ll have to look and see what makes and models they are.

Active rust should be removed to preserve the knife. Polishing a knife will lower the value of a collectible to the serious collector, but may increase the value of some knives to others.
