I don't know about the rest of you guys and gals, but while I may drift, hah, more like lose my way ;) I tend to keep coming back to one knife, but my keen sense of priorities haven't rested enough attention to come to grips that it may be the knife :)

For me, I try this knife, this folder, this steel, always the new kid on the block steel, but even with those, I find that I take this knife out of the drawer and put her back on my belt to carry, because of a few things that are just so right about it;

Size
....you need just the right size to carry, can't be TOO large or you find yourself at the wrong end of your HR police folks or scaring people at work which will get back to the HR folks just the same. So it needs to be on the smaller side, this one measure about 3.9" closed.

Looks
....no getting around that, you do want something that is pleasing to the eye, even non knife types would go 'now that's nice...'

Scales
....I like stag, always have, probably always will, although the jigged bone is great too and some woods are fine, but stag has some inherent tactile feel about it and aids in gripping the folder.

Bolsters
....I like stainless brushed finished bolsters, easy to maintain

Blade
....I do like a fine edged blade, one that is flat ground down to an almost zero bevel grind, usually prefer a modified wharncliff but in this case it's not, but still works. One pet peeve and usually a deal breaker with me, is any break in the edge line, meaning a sharpening choil, they just tend to catch on material, some traditional folders will have that sharpening notch set at an angle so material will ride up and onto the blade, those I can tolerate, it's the abrupt 90 degree cut out that bugs the bee's wax outta my ears, just hate that, you probably noticed I'm pretty adamant regarding that ;)

Blade steel
....Stainless, any more it's gotta be stainless, I've left the carbon a while ago, can't tolerate them any longer. This knife has Sandvik 13c27 which is known as Razor steel and boy does it get sharp! I wish that GEC started offering their knives with that steel, I think it would be a real boon for them, well, at least for me!

Blade play
....really don't care for ANY blade play, just don't

Well, after all that was written, here's the knife, it's Le Compact by Le Thiers par Chambriard, rascal just always smiles at me when I go to draw her from her resting place and put her on my belt. Cuts so well, so effortlessly due to the edge geometry, and, she looks nice too.

Here's mine Gary. I managed to get SN #02. I'm the 2nd named after my father. I then got SN #03 for my son who is the 3rd. My grandson was born on 02/13/15 and he is of course the 4th with our family name.
In anticipation of the fourth, first born son to carry on our name, I managed to find the SN #04. So, me, my son, and grandson, Ronnie II, Ronnie III, and Ronnie IV all have the same knife in the series number 2,3, and 4. I thought it was powerful thing to do.

I'm drawn to this knife (SN #02) daily since I want to use her and put as much soul into her as I can.

I picture my grandson one day, 50 or 60 years from now, holding #02 and #03 in his hand, thinking about me and his dad, then reaching into his pocket and pulling out #04.

When I tell this story and talk about the knives, I call them "The Legacy Knives".

There's a quick story of my dad, Ronnie I, in my signature below.

Cool thread Gary

My everyday Traditional that is special and always will be , meets my own set of criteria , which is vaguely similar to yours

Size - blade around 3 inches , that's a useful length , and I agree not threatening .

Looks - nothing outrageous , elegant but understated .

Scales - I've realised that my favourite knives Traditional , Modern , Multitool are all metal handled .

Blade - Flat ground , no exceptions , Sheepsfoot , Wharncliff , Spear in that order .

Steel - I've been listening to you for to long , Stainless , doesn't have to be a supersteel .

Blade play - I hate it , and will jettison any knife that has weak springs and movement .

Am I allowed to add a new criteria :)

Multi blade or Multi function - This is an area that has become more important to me .

So here it is .

Ken

This one's easy. I received this #73 for Father's Day a few years ago. I carried it all last year to see if I could. I've since allowed myself to start carrying others again, but this knife still goes in the pocket more than any other.

Quick aside -

Gary, I love those pics where you show the sharpness of your knives by push cutting the corners of paperback books. It's only recently that I've been able to get a knife that sharp.

:D

Man, that's great Ronnie! love that and those knives look terrific !
Thanks sir,
G2

Edited to add, you guys were posting while I was replying, nice on both of you! and that looks like a sharp one now sir!

The majority of the time I find myself carrying one of the three stockman patterns that I own... A large Case stockman #6375, the Northfield #81 in African Blackwood, or the #66 Calf Roper in Blood Red bone. The stockman is definitely my favorite pattern.

When push comes to shove this #81 in African Blackwood gets the nod. It just "fits" me so well and is so incredibly useful. This pic is several months old.

That's a nice looking knife. Mine is an Old Timer my dad gave me. It's nothing fancy, but has been overseas with me 3 times '04-'07. I plan to give it to my son when he gets older.

Good stuff guys! thanks for sharing!

Fine knife Gary, reminds me of le compact I lost, it had some really decent stag on it too:grumpy: nice in the hand, excellent workmanship and wotta cutta! I have one in Ebony but it's not the same really.....

SAK Camper is what I always come back to. I gave the first one to a valued friend but soon bought another. :D No matter what else I carry the SAK camper or my clip TC barlow ride shotgun with me :D

Like most folks that hang out here I own a decent (obscene?) number of pocketknives - but this one knife seems to be as close to perfect in the function arena as I might get. A basic Case 6347 SS - I like the size - any bigger and it's too big for my preference for LFP carry. I like stainless (well, I like carbon too) - I pretty much like any decent steel that will cut when properly edged. A Stockman has long been my favorite pattern for blade selection and these blades are as big as they come in a 3-7/8" knife; the rounded bolsters ride easy in my pocket too. As for looks I like the color and the pocketworn jigging. I have many other knives that I really like - but this one finds itself in my pocket more than any other. OH

Ps You gents own some gorgeous knives!

Rough Rider large sunfish. I don't know why I find it so useful for EDC.
Marbles "Camp Knife" (all stainless steel copy of the Camillus Army Utility knife) the best multi-tool ever.
Uncle Henry LB7 (new made)

Willgoy, that's a sad tale of woe there, surprised that the new one isn't as good? what do you find to be wrong with it? my first Chambriard had some blade play that the fellow I got it from did disclose, so I emailed to Philippe Chambriard in France and he said send her back and they fixed it up in a snap for me. In this case I believe there was a difference in the spring thickness verses the blade tang thickness so it didn't fit exactly right, but they fixed it up neatly!

And guys those are nice knives too and good stories, always liked some background on things like this.

No Gary, nothing wrong with the Ebony one at all, but it aint no stag that's my gripe:grumpy:

Yah, very pretty too but you're right, ain't stag. I'd like to get a Le Compact in Juniper some day, but that'll be a while.
G2

Gary, what's the sheath look like that you carry it in? I don't have a rotation anymore. I tend to carry the same knife for an extended period of time. Right now it's GEC's 81 stockman. I guess if there is one knife that I go back to it would be my Mini Copperlock.

This is really a hard one for me, which I guess says that I don't really have "just one" that I keep coming back to, but . . .
in spite of my love of all things stockman, this gorgeous and perfectly matched elk stag traditional trapper comes as close as I'm gonna get.

edited to add you posted as I was replying, that's a beautiful knife too !

Thanks, G2, the elk stag can be pretty variable, but this one just does it for me. It's nice and thin, too.

Beautiful knife holsters!
