I have a student who loves knives! He is in my 6th grade class. One day he shows up to school with a picture of all of his knives and shows it to me. I asked him to take some photos of several of the jacks, a barlow, and a few others. Yesterday he comes back to the room after school and shows up with his vintage folders. He said, "Maybe you can tell me more about them." Wouldn't you know it! He had an old two bladed Queen, a Sheffield, and an old Case. The Queen and Case are carbon steel! I showed him where to find the manu's marks and we looked at the worn condition of the blades. We could see chips and scrapes from use and sharpening. He went home with a smile on his face. He said, "I have more at home and I'll bring those by one day."
After all of the videogames and other electronic delights (yes, I know this forum counts) that children are into, one might think that hope is fading for the future of knives and a love of the outdoors. No way! This boy hunts and fishes and does the not-so-everyday things children in much of Los Angeles county have gotten away from. What a relief!
