Traditional knives in modern materials

Hello everyone!

I came accross yesterday site for finnish knife and puukko maker who makes traditional puukko's and knives with modern material's while retaining traditional shapes and forms.

One particularly interesting knife was full tang Leuku with micarta handles 12C27 stainless steel and kydex sheath. He had alot various knives, including titanium lined folders but I found puukko's and similars with kydex sheath and modern material's quite tempting but I am sure prices will be pretty hefty.

I don't want to hotlink to any images or put any direct links since I remember it would have been against rules but I'll play safe googling: "Puukko Pekka" will help you find his site.

Full tang leuku #15 in knives category. I am not sure how traditional lovers might like combining new material's in traditional design but some of those knives are really tempting.
 
A truly good design is timeless. To me, it can only be improved by upgrading materials as technology evolves, while leaving the original aesthetics and ergonomics as is. I'm looking forward to the day when I can afford to buy myself a good ol' custom sodbuster, but with the latest & greatest in materials. To me, an S30V blade with Micarta or G10 scales & stainless (or maybe even Ti) liners would be perfection! :D:thumbup:
 
I have a wonderful GEC trapper with "midnight black" micarta handles. Really very very chic !

Now that slipjoint is really nice. Modern design and materials while being a slipjoint.
 
Take a look at Ray Laconicos slippies. Traditional designs (nessmuk, clip points etc), with modern materials (O1 and micarta on most that I've seen).
 
Re: Post #4. Now that is a truly lovely knife. Let us think of a 1914 Ford Model T wooden wheel with an early pneumatic tire. That is traditional, shall we say. Now let us look at a 2010 custom alloy wheel for a sports car, with one of those very different new low profile tires. Both the 1914 and 2010 units are round, roll, and support a car. Is the modern wheel/tire traditional? The GTC knife cuts and folds up, like knives of yore. I see little correlation, beyond that, with the great old bone Remingtons of the 1920's. I am not assigning good nor evil here, just trying to stimulate thought and conversation.

I like Dagon's GEC too, micarta works really well on Traditional knives, take a look at Kerry's recent efforts in it for example.

Funny thing is that modern materials can work very well on Traditional knives, but the other way round? Modern or Tactikools with bone or suchlike? I don't think so.....
 
I don't have anything against modern materials. I carried a Buck 301 for too many decades to have any objections. But I don't like mixing things up. If it's a stainless blade, then I want modern synthetic handles. For carbon, give me old natural stuff. A well patined carbon blade looks great on mellowed old stag, but a nice bright stainless blade with the same just looks wrong on some level. Kind of like a nice old percussion rifle with a synthetic stock. You know it looks wrong when you see it.
