Does anyone know of a website that I could peruse that explains how and why certain traditional patterns of slip joints came about. I've always wondered how certain knives came to be called certain things, and who first thought to make them and such. I realize a lot of them come from the shape and look of the knife, but I still don't know the origins of patterns like Peanut and Sodbuster and so forth.
Any reference material would be useful and most appreciated.

Well you are on a good website for that now right here. But to be honest I would recommend you start out right and put the horse before the cart, so to speak. I very much highly recommend your first source to be the book:

"LEVINE'S GUIDE TO KNIVES AND THEIR VALUES, Extensively Revised 4th Edition", by Bernard Levine.

Once you spend some well spent hours reading the first 275-300 pages you will become very well versed indeed. This book is hands down the very best source you can have for the knowledge you seek.

Reading THIS thread helped me a lot. And It has some of the nicest knives in town (bladeforum town that is :D)

Anybody know where I can get one, or borrow one, for a little while? I can't find them unless I spend a lot of $$ I ain't got. I'd love to read it.

thx - cpr
