Traditional RNG EDC

Time for a little fun.

Getting ready for the day is always easy until it's time to choose a traditional blade (or two) for the day. As an incurable knife knut, I find myself struggling to choose just the right knife for the day without going overboard and filling my pockets. I also find that when I have trouble choosing a knife, I start to think about all the other knives out there that i don't own yet, which is perfectly normal and acceptable (right?), but I have a lot of knives! some that get carried regularly and some that have never been out of the house.

I have also been on a little mini streak of non knife buying. It has been two weeks since I hit the buy button and I haven't been looking to fill my shopping cart either. I am proud of myself and I want to reward all of the wonderful knives that I already own.

So, today as I was getting ready (I'm about to head out to meet some friends for the 49ers game) I decided to try something a little different. I lined up some knives that were calling to me today. In total I lined up 10 knives ranging in size, pattern, material, blade shape, and frequency of carry. I then downloaded a random number generator on my phone and put my fate into the ether! I held my breath and pressed the button...Hey, that wasn't so bad! in fact it was kind of fun letting go of the decision!

I think that the heavens were trying to encourage me, for today the RNG picked two of my favorite EDCs:

After trying, and failing at some of the great challenges on this forum, I am excited to give the RNG a try for awhile. It's silly that I think so much about which knife to carry, but it's also part of the fun and why I love this hobby.

So, give it a shot and let me know what you think about randomizing your EDC!

I usually just end up with two or three pocket fulls of knives.

usually 4 traditionals and one modern......I just can't handle it........

So I'm not the only one who spends more time thinking about my knife than what clothes to wear. The RNG is a cute idea, but I'm afraid it would negate my justification for carrying more than one at a time: I need a very small one for detailed cuts. And one I don't mind if it gets a little messed up for messy work. And a nice clean one for if I need to cut food.........

Ha! I'm not going to lie...one of my motivations for this exercise was to limit the number of knives I fill my pockets with. On a normal day I'm loaded for bear like y'all ;) I also thought about having two rows: one for big working knives and one for small task knives and selecting one from each row. Ultimately, I just hit go twice and accepted the limit.

I like the idea of the random number generator, although picking a knife hasn't been an issue for the last 3 weeks or so. Thus far, I've made it through the end of December and the better part of January using nothing but a black Victorinox Executive. There have been times when the knife knut in me wants to carry something else, and I do. It's weird, but that itched gets scratched just by having whatever I'm craving in the other pocket, even if it doesn't see any use. Thus far, the Executive has worked just fine. Granted, with the exception of a rather large Becker in my gardening tool box (because it won't fit elsewhere), I keep my accumulation locked in an old .50 caliber ammo box, in the garage. A BRIMMING .50 caliber ammo box. Keeping those sharps out in the garage, in a locked box, helps to mitigate some of the temptation, and has the added benefit of keeping my 2.75 year old son from my collection of sharp objects.

If I get one of those Radio knives, I'll be loaded for beer. :D

Fun idea for those daily struggles. For myself I have just had one knife in the pocket. Not sure what has happened but my desire to carry many different knives has disappeared. Every now and then I'll still feel the urge but I find I just like keeping it simple. Probably just a phase or maybe I'm just not as excited about knives.

Hmmmm, my wife thinks I spend too much time picking out both a knife and a watch for the day...:D

Thank heavens I only own one wristwatch (classic Seiko diver's watch I've had for 10 years). That's just one too many dilemmas - a watch AND pocket knife! I'm a one-watch guy here, that's all I own so no confusion there, lol.

I don't have a whole bunch of knives like some do here - I have just 8 of them but for me that's plenty. I actually have no desire to complicate life any further than that. I carry two pocket knives. I always have my 55 with me, so the only dilemma is which fills the #2 spot for that day? It's nearly always the Pemberton or the TC Barlow anymore, so not much changes. The 92 gets the nod often enough though. Occasionally it's one of the others, like my 85 EO, 79 or 61. But yes every day involves a deliberation as to what goes in the pocket... :)

On weekdays I pretty much take the same knife every day due to size restrictions on what I can legally carry at work. (Buck 305 Lancer.)

And on weekends, taking time to choose a knife to carry that day is a delightful luxury to which I treat myself.

Ha! Weird coincidence -- I started rolling a die to pick out my knife in the morning when I got back from my xmas traveling. I figure I'll change the 6-knife pool once a month, everything will get carried a couple times, etc. I put a few additional 'rules' in to keep it interesting...

1) The 'volunteer' -- I can carry the knife in slot #1 in addition to, or instead of, whatever I rolled this morning. This gives me an 'out' if it just doesn't make sense to carry a given random knife on the day it is rolled. (I don't abuse the option because I'd get bored carrying the same thing all the time...)
2) I may re-roll in the case of rolling the same number I rolled yesterday, if I want. (See above, re: boredom)

It seems to be working well -- this month's theme is "Under 3 inches closed and nothing fancy."
1) Leatherman Micra (Volunteer/local-flavor)
2) Buck Companion (Black Valox)
3) Camillus pony-jack (Yeller delrin)
4) Case "working" peanut. (Brown delrin)
5) Schrade mighty-mite (Brown delrin)
6) Victorinox Ambassador (Red cellidor)

I'm happy enough with this setup -- though I've gone the whole month so far without rolling a 3 and that's beginning to weird me out a little. (What does lady luck have against Camillus?! :D)

After reading your post Todd, I knew it would only be a matter of time before the subject of dice came up!

No - you aren´t ;) I´m the same as well. Clothes are easy, grab into the cupboard and getting out the clothes, but knives - there´s time needed :D

Todd, in honor of your idea, I used a rng to pick out my carry knife today.

The options:

It works!

Also, I'm kind of boring.

Seriously though, it is a really cool idea, and one I've never thought of. Pretty neat.

I always have a hard time picking what to carry each morning, so like many others here, I usually have a couple/few. ;)
