I have this itch to make a traditional sheath. Was there any tutorial or detailed video/hints/tips?

The last five minutes of this fifteen minute video show the process and the tools used.

A possible shortcut would be to use wooden spacers around the inside edges of the wood slabs, instead of hollowing out the wood with a special tool as shown in the video. I think it would take a lot of skill and experience to use the hollowing method and get the opening to match the blade thickness just right. Also, you would have to start with thicker wood slabs.

On the other hand, it might be a lot of fun to do it entirely the traditional way.

I will use a mill and have it dialed in perfectly. I'm wondering now about leather type.

Yes they use Buffalo Hide an easily attainable resource on their end. A good quality easily attained cow hide here would be a great alternative. Inexpensive and easier to get your hands on for the work you intend. Although, I'm just a wannabe, in this area. If you need further direction I can hook you up with a few proffesional holster makers that can help you out. They are personal friends always willing to help out.
