I bought my gf's dad a Buck "Prince" a couple years back. He never carried a knife so I didn't want to spend a lot of money on something. Anyway, he carries the thing everywhere now and I wanted to buy him something a little more expensive this time around.

I want to stick with the traditional wood or stag handles, with either a liner lock or back lock. A blade somewhere between 2-3" long would be good. I intend to have STR put a pocket clip on it so enough meat on the edges to do that.

What are your recommendations? I hate the SS Case knives and can't find anything in carbon from them in my price range. Queen maybe?

you could maybe try a buck knife, they have classic looking knives, i had one a while back, it was very nice.

Perhaps something authentic scandinavian from this page ?

I'm a fan of those knives but I don't think it's something he would really enjoy.

He already has a Buck knife that's what I gave him last time, looking for something a little different and hopefully a bit better steel too.

...
Queen maybe?

Queens are excellent knives. (and my current obsession)

But most models might be slightly above your $50 price range, but only slightly and it depends on the model you have in mind.

I would consider spending the extra $15 or so to get him a gift he will surely appreciate.

Check out cumberlandknifeworks.com/ for a nice collection of Queen knives.

I think I've decided on a Queen Canoe in birds eye maple. I know it isn't locking, but it's a stout slip joint and should work well.

I know Queen made a few liner locks, what were the model names of them?

Not a liner lock but the Mountain Man Lockback is a locking Queen knife.

BTW The Canoe is a great choice and one of my favorite patterns for a "smaller" knife.

The mini-hunter is a medium sized Queen Cutlery liner lock. I bought my father the Copperhead, which, as far as I can tell, is Identical to the mini-hunter except minus the liner lock. The copperhead is a good sized knife for EDC, but the one I ordered arrived amazingly dull. I think this lack of edge is kinda characteristic of Queen knives, but it is nothing a good sharpening can't fix. The fact that Queen knives look classy and rock D2 steel is fairly impressive considering their price range.

The mini-hunter below is just inside your price range.

This can be had for about $60. A bit bigger than you wanted, and just a bit more money. But it already has a clip. Sorry Steve.

I copied two descriptions of the same knife from different stores in order to get more info. One price was $57. The other was $58. Both reputable dealers.

Forgot all about that Case. The only thing I dislike about it is how high the clip is. I will think it over and make a decision soon.

In the meantime, I'm ordering a Queen Mini Hunter for myself. :D

Where is a good site to buy these? I have a hard time finding the CV models. I think I'm going with this knife but wanted to explore the other handle options.

Thanks!

If you want a Case CV knife the only current handle options are amber bone, red bone and yellow synthetic. The mini-copperlock in CV is nice too, but you'll have to find one in the secondary market. Case has stopped making them as part of their "vault" program.

The Queen 41L mini-hunter or Mountain Man would be another solid choice imo. I plan to get one or both of these for myself one of these days, I like Queen's D2. Note that the 41L is listed as a liner-lock, but it still has a back spring like a regular slip-joint. The liner-lock feature is more of a back-up. Not a negative in my eyes, but to some it may be.

Thanks for the info, guys. I think I'm going to go with Case for the one hand opening feature and pocket clip from the factory. I do like the other Queen models for myself and might be ordering something from them soon. :D

Nevermind, newgraham has em and they're a favorite of mine. Ordering now!

Thanks fella's, I think he's really going to enjoy this.

Look at the Mcustas. I'm just posting the link from japaneseknifedirect because they have all the pictures but you can get a nice Mcusta from many of our favorite dealers for less. This dealer however is fast to deliver and usually has them in stock versus pre-order.

Focus on the Basic Series Folders (awesome knives) and the Gentlemen's Folders.

I own two Tactility models and seven Basic Series Folders.
