I heard about all youse guys :D having a good time back in October in Frederick, I felt left out. Let's do it again! Can't post this in Traditional, but a couple members in the MD area put our heads together, we'd like to have another get together. Good food, good booze and good knives, even learn a little about sharpening techniques courtesy of Jackknife.

I was supposed to post this about a month ago, and dropped the ball. We want to do this around mid to late March, definitely before April. Somewhere with good food (think burgers and beer) and they won't freak out over sharp things ;).

Last time was in Frederick. They met up for burgers and beers, and walked to Edgeworks, a local knife shop, afterwards. We could do this again. We would like to include a knife shop in the mix, but seeing as Edgeworks is the only one in central MD (unless anyone can recommend another knife shop or gun shop that has a good selection of knives, through email) that might not be an option.

Any ideas are welcomed.

There's theBrewers Alley where the burgers and beer is good. Wide choice of micro brews from local area.

For Texmex, the La Paz down the street is good. They have a beef and bean burrito that's to kill for.

Just tell me where and when.

Carl.

I'd like to try to make it this time. I bailed out last time due to weather. I did finally make it up to Edge Works last weekend. It's a pretty nice shop, not the biggest selection of traditionals though. I've done a lot of looking online, and the only other place I came up with was AMH Cutlery in Baltimore. It's a really small store though. The guy does most of his bussiness at the shows, so his shop is a little unorganized. If you were at the Chesapeake show, he was the guy against the left wall as you walked in the door. He was selling all of the Benchmades and Spydercos. Again, no traditionals. Maybe we should just plan a day trip to PA, to check out the Case or GEC factory :)

Some good ideas, but we don't have to have a knife shop in the mix.

I've never been to his shop, but I've seen him at shows, I would like to drop by. Problem is, it's located in a not so great part of east Baltimore. The only place nearby that I could recommend to eat is a pit beef stand, right next to a strip club (long since stopped going to the strip club, still stop by the pit beef stand occassionally). Even that is a couple miles away. Because of the area, I would have to pass on that idea. If it wasn't in such a shaky area, I would say yes.

As for a trip to the Case, Great Eastern or Queen plants, that would be a great idea. We would have to plan that out a good 6 months or so in advance. I think we should pursue that for next year. Lots of factors involved, least of which is transportation up there and back. Also, we would have to find out if they are open for visitors on Saturdays. This is a very good idea, and one that I want to pursue in another thread. I'm going to make another thread when I get home.

Also, this is for all members, if you recommend a knife or gun shop, say something like "the one near so and so, or the one in so and so" in this thread, and email me. When we come to a decision, I'll list any shops we'll check out. We don't wanna get this closed for name dropping knife shops. (I would surmise that restaurants are okay :D).

A visit to the Case factory is way more than a day trip. It's a long days drive just to get up there on non interstate roads. Almost be better to fly into Erie and rent a car to drive over, and stay in a motel.

Carl.

You monkeys. I wish I could join you but I'm too far away to drive. Have fun and be safe. :)

Carl, I see that Mapquest says it would take about 6 hours to get to Bradford. If you leave at 4am, you'll be too damn tired to visit the factory. Those 6 hours would be driving non stop.

Tidioute would be 6 hours also.

Aw man, I'm retired. The few reasons I'll get up hours before dawn;

1. The house is on fire and we have to get out.

2. The son in law or daughter calls us to tell us the arrival of our new grandchild is imminent and we need to meet them at the hospital, they're already on the way.

3. Karen and I are driving to Florida and want to get the heck out of the D.C. area before the morning rush hits the beltway.

4. Going crabbing.

That's pretty much it. Anything else would have to be extraordinary. :D

Carl.

So you would get up late for crabbing ;) ? 4am is when you should be out on the Bay, or at least in the River!

Hey, why don't we meet up and go to Chubby's up on RT 15 by Emmitsburg? Little blue building with some of the best BBQ I've had this side of Texas? Then we could drive to Edgeworks. I'll go out of my way for BBQ ribs or brisket!

Carl.

Wish I lived in Central MD. (at least on the day you guys meet) ;)

You could always drive up for the weekend. Karen will make up the spare room and we'll kill some Evan Williams.

Evan Williams, yeah, that's the ticket!

Carl.

C'mon up. Not like you can get good BBQ in Georgia ;)...

Gus, being completely serious, the Texas beef brisket at this place called the Lisbon Grill is definitely the best BBQ I've ever had. Blows pork bbq out of the water. Carl knows where to eat!

Anyone else from MD/PA/WV/VA wanna drop by? Three's a crowd, we're already there.

We'll get good and plastered, and wait to see everyone else in April at the Hagerstown knife show. :D

The only places I know of in Hagerstown are the Sheetz downtown, and Wonder Books (sounds like a porn shop, but it's a great used bookstore). Any good places to eat on Dual Highway?

Carl, if we can bump it to the day of the knife show and go to the bbq place you mentioned afterwards, I would have to check with the member that may be out of town after April.

The Annual Mason-Dixon Knife Club Show

Forgot to mention - this is a 95% traditional/slip joint show.

Okay, in Hagerstown is J&J's catering and BBQ. Their specialty is pulled pork and Texas style brisket. I've never been there, but a friend of a friend give it a very high rating. I just may have to go reconnoiter for you guys. It's a dirty risky job, but somebody has to do it. I'll let ya know.

Carl.
