Traditional Switch blade

There was only one antique shop I had not been to in Simi Valley. This place seemed a bit hoity toity for my taste, which is why I never stopped in,but I was wrong....... They had a nice Syracuse bare head slipjoint pen knife, a Regimentals scheffield R40 with box and papers, looks like an english swiss army knife, and I bought this little illegal piece of memorabilia (in CA anyways). This shop had more knives in than any of the other 3 antique stores in Simi! Time has made it shed it's skin, but the mechanics work quite well. This blade leaps out like a thoroughbred at the Kentucky Derby. I carried it on Father's day, and kept forgetting to set the lock. It opened a few times in my pocket, since I am not used to carrying such a traditional tough guy knife.:D It will go on the shelf, so I am not a scofflaw. Lots of fun to play with. I am amazed the mechanics are so sound still. I believe this one is from the 50's. It has the patent # on it.

The blade tip was grinded down, possibly bent, and sharpened poorly. I will probably rebevel the whole thing. I gotta have dem sharp.:D

I feel lucky to have found it.

That's a great find!

The little old lady at the counter who sold it to me as I was leaving said, "enjoy your switchblade!" I turned around with a smile and said, "Shhhhhh, it is not a switch blade, it is a vintage automatic push button cutting device!" She and my wife both laughed.

That's a nice piece, CJ. Nice one to add to the group!

Hi cj65 -

That is very cool!

Interestingly, I was just last night looking closely at one of my grandfather's old knives, and it has the same imperial tang stamp on it as yours.

I will have to do some googling to see if I can learn anything about those old knives.

Mine is not an auto - it is a two blade slippie.

I'll post pics soon.

Thanks for the pics of your nice find, and congrats!

best regards -

If you do a search in Bernard Levine's forum for that patent #, you will get some good info. Start from within (Blade Forums), then search from without (Google). ;)

That brings back memories! I had any number of those in the late 50's when I was a kid, and they were sold everywhere you could buy a pocketknife. Most were covered with some kind of striped celluloid. Nice find!
