I grew up watching Randolph Scott & John Wayne cowboy movies, Bonanza, The Rifleman & Have Gun, Will Travel on TV. All the other kids were watchin' for the guns while I was hoping to see one of those "bone" handled bowie knives (back then didn't know stag from oosic, from linoleum ;))
The best part is that these "Traditional" knives were the "Tactical" knives of their day...get it? ;)
I worked with our own Bruce Evans on my latest purchase. Well actually I played around drawing and Bruce did the actual work ;)
Check it out here:

Hey, it doesn't have to be black to be tac :)

Please remember this is about the use of older style knives in a modern tactical role...oh well, click on the link and you'll see...
;)

41 views and not a comment?!
Maybe I can tempt y'all with some specs...
8" forged straight backed bowie blade with flase edge on the face side only...ebony and ivory coffin handle @ 4 1/2"...oval nickle silver guard...
Very much old school & very tactical too!
I cannot wait till I get my hands on it (the knife) next week!

Well, at there's two of us who remember Randolph Scott!

Great knife, really classic, it's got some of the lines of the Searles Bowie, not the garish, fantasy versions.

You got lots of comments -- on the other thread!

Ebbtide, that's a mighty fine looking fighter you designed & the execution of the design is s-o-o-o-o nice!! You can be proud of that one for sure. Let us know how it dances in the hand once you test it out a bit. It looks like it could be lightning quick.

That's a beautiful blade, and a whole lot nicer than anything Randolph ever had in his hand. I'd say the outlaws are in for some serious trouble. I really do like that straight spine. It's almost an East meets West fusion. Bruce does great work, and that's a nice design!

Hey Jerry,

I remember Hoot Gibson! He had a table right next to ours at the Blade Show this past june.

OK, I know who the original Hoot Gibson was too.

Bruce & Ebbtide, Great looking knife.

Bruce, nice work as usual.

Wally, congratz, good design and great execution. Hey, is there any chance of you bringing it to the NY Show? I sure would like to see Bruce's work first hand.

Like Wally, I'm a child of the 50's now in his 50's and I grew up with the same cowboy TV shows and movies. I know deep in my heart my love for Stag now has something to do with the handles on Roy Roger's Colts. If I close my eyes and just think of a knife I still picture Jim Bowie's "Arkansas Toothpick" in Walt Disney's "Davy Crockett". Maybe part of this whole attraction for knives has something to do with the child within us all. ;)

oh, we were suppossed to be looking at the knife in those pics... ok, my mistake... Just need the backdrop for yourself too eh? :D  :p

That knife looks quite nice. Good job on the design.

I just typed for ten minutes before realizing that I had hit the 'new thread' button.

Anyway,
Yes PhilL, it is the child within us. Back then we said 'someday I'm gunna have a knife like that' and someday has finally rolled around :)
I'll try to bring her (the knife! all of Bruce's knives are 'hers') to the show for you to see. I think a Winchester 94 Trapper would compliment it nicely, alot bigger to sneak past the wife though...

I like Bruce's term "Gentleman's Tactical" better than my 'Traditional Tactical'.
Dressy but all business ;)
Bell bowies, Price daggers & bowies, Jerry Hossom's fighters to name a few.

Thanks for all of the kind words!
Can't wait to get my sticky mitts on it :D

The words "Traditional Tactical" make me think of a Case Russlock. BE, thats a badass bowie you have there. Very nice.

Being a NEWBIE, I just never thought of a fixed Blade as a "tactical". I always pictured something small, compact that you could stick in a boot, in the waitsband and when you needed it, WHAM it was there. But as I learn, maybe I am starting to understand the use of the term 'tactical" with knives as the topic.......lots to learn!!!!

The term Traditional Tactical, also brought back thoughts of the first Tactical style(new generation)blades, you know the Black and Gray kind. That is why I chose the term "Gentlemans Tactical" It would be for a knife that would look good in a suit pocket or belt or even in the brief case during a buisness meeting or luncheon and not be thought of as just mean looking knife, but more on the classy lines of the old,I mean real old style Like from Sheffield or old San Fransisco,But also when the chips are down it could be counted on to protect and serve along with the best of the black and gray tacticals.
Wolfmann,If you think back the original tactical styles came about from the Rambo Movies and were all fixed Blades...
During the Bowie's hay day of old,the gentleman had there classy high end show piece Bowies that they carried while the ruffions had the rustic looking Blades....
Thus the term Gentlemans Tactical. As I like to use the classical lines only with a more modern feel and reliability.
I know that my knives will hold up to the same tests that the newer style tacticals will just go to my web site and look at the Dragon slayer Bowie and click on it's review by Mario. And he did the test with the knife in the picture not a stripped down to the basics Bowie but a fully dressed up with filework and all type of Bowie...
Thanks for all the kind words here everybody..

Now I fully understanding what this thread is about. Would it be proper to carry a "tactical fixed blade" in an upside down carry type shoulder rig? And assuming that it would be, would it be more gentlemanly to carry it in leather or Kydex while in a sports Jacket and tie? And Now the Third question. If I am carry a firearm in say a Miami Vice shoulder rig, weapon on my weak side, of course, could you somehow carry a fixed on the strong side comfortably? I know these may seem dumb on their face, I just do not know if and how it would be accomplished BUT I might like to try it. The idea of having them few extra inches of space make sense.....wolf

Wolf,You could carry it anyway you wanted to.The whole idea behind the Gentelmans Tactical though is to not look threatening when you have do take it out or someone gets a flash of it when it is not being used.It would look more like a piece of jewelery than a knife .You know a glimpse of something shinny inside the jacket not a glimpse of a bonified mean knife.
I have made knives that some people look at and say I really don't like knives that look like that or I don't like knives at all,Then I make a cool looking old world style all dressed up for the ball and those same people cant wait to see it and pick it up and love on it,and they really say they like it and that that is really pretty, and they don't even think about it being the same knife as before only prettier. You see the idea is to not scare people and have them freak out when they happen to see it but instead you want them to not really care that you have such a beautiful piece of art on you at all times, but if there is a need for the knife they will ask you if you could cut something for them and not back up a mile when you pull it out.Or if it was needed to protect yourself you knew that it would serve and protect as well as anything out there. And thus when pulled out in a defensive manner it would shock the person that was menacing you as they wasn't expecting that as they might have gotten a glimpse of it before they decided to attack you and didn't even think that that was what it was,and when you pull it out it shocks them enough they get out of there even quicker than they might have..
I don't know if this makes sense to anybody else. But I carry a fixed Blade on my hip 24/7 and when I put a mean looking tactical on people look and even the security guard at the mall will tell me to put it in the car,But when I put a nice classy looking one on nobody seems to give it a second glance and I can go anywhere with it on.
It is like the difference betwen a young man driving a jacked up loud sounding muscle car and the police watch his everymove and are always expecting trouble,as opposed to the same young man driving say a nice classy car that is just a nice beautiful classy car or just something that mom and dad drive daily and guess what he can get away with more stuff in it because the police don't give that car a second glance as it doesn't look like trouble.
That is why I am going to design a all metal or a throat and tipped sheath with a boot/belt clip on it for this series of knives I am going to make.that way the whole package is nice looking and the knife can be carried in any position needed.I think the kydex should stay with the normal version of tactical.I don't even like the looks of kydek on a hunting knife. Now we might try a kydex lined sheath that way the blade is secured in by the kydex butit has a thin leather cover over it and a throat and tip for the beauty. That may be a cool idea,I may look into it and see what I can come up with.Where can I get a piece of Kydex to try this out ?

Bruce

Yes Sir, I most certainly agree. I am not a gunbutt flasher or a knife flasher, this is my CONCERN. I want to be able to carry so ONLY I know what I have under my sportscoat. I sure do not want to or need to telegraph to anyone I am armed. For two reasons. one, I may not and probably will NOT know who the bad guy is until there is an overt act. I do not want him/her to see a gun Butt or a big piece of steel and sucker me and take me out, and secondly I do not want some Paranoid tree-hugger to see this armament, call 911 on a cell phone and get off some elevator to be "faced" (placed forcibily face down on a hard surface very quickly and feel my arms bend in ways they cannot bend anymore!!!!) by a SWAT team. My question goes to the complete opposite. CAN I accomplish this without letting anyone know I am not only armed with a firearm, but have a fixed Blade under my jacket?
That is my sole concern. I am now interested in this concept, I am concerned about maintaining MY tactical edge by looking like a weanie, until I see the incident begin to unfold and turn into
WEANIE-MAN!!!!!!!.........wolf

Wolf,I here where you are coming from.I don't know if this is a real possiability,as no matter how hard you try one or the other is liable to get flashed when you are not expecting to do so.That is why I felt that the classy fancyier Knife wouldnt be as noticeable or at least not thought of as a weapon.I have seen people carrying one or the other at any given time and they are not noticeable.Mostly it depends on how thin and big the knife is as it can be very thin and unnoticeable if you try hard enough to cover it you will,The pistole will be harder to cover than a knife.Soo Yes you can accomplish the task of carrying both if you try hard enough. The ones I am going to make will be able to be clipped on the inside of the inside breast pocket of the sport coat co that only the handle and guard would be showing and thus nobody will see it,unless you take off the jacket and it lays open and the knife can be seen by everybody around, thus the less intimidating package.
I never carry my knife hidden or consealed and when I have my pistol on my belt I also keep it out in the open,Here in Mississippi we are allowed by law to openly carry a firearm but not consealed without a permit. So I never got hasseled when carrying either. There was a couple of incidents a few years back were some people were robbing the pawn shops in town and one of the owners was shot and killed,So I started carrying a piece when I worked at the scrap yard for my Mom,She wasn't real sure about it but my stepdad was also packing, she asked a police man that came into the yard about me carrying it one day and he told her that it was a good idea.We used to get allot of rowdy drunks come in and they would start stuff with the other guys or Mom when they would weigh in there metal and I would get called to the scales and sometimes that wouldn't stop them and i wuld have to make them leave, but when I started openly carrying the pistol I would never have to say a word, they would see it and then shut up.I wasn't trying to be a hard ass or anything but sometimes a little flash can stop allot of BS....

Now as for my thoughts about the name for my knives it is like when you see a woman and man walking hrough a gun show and she doesn't even want to touch one of teh plain tactical, made for fighting knives. But dress that same knife up so that it looks like a work of art and she will just have to pick it up and says that she just loves it.It doesnt look thretening anymore, but just like the sleeper street rod when the time come it will hold all the punch of the other car.

picture this:You take a Kydex sheathed black blasted finished tactical and set it out of a brief case during a meeting and watch the people stat staring and wispering whats he going to do with that. Now take the same Blade and add a old Sheffield or Price style handle on that tanto half serrated edge knife and then sheath it with a leather covered kydex sheath with a throat and tip on it so it look real classy.now set the same knife out still in its sheath and watch people ask if they can see it or that really don't give it a second thought as they think it is just a art knife or something pretty, but when needed and you pull it from the sheath, now you have that old tactical blade style that you are acustomed to using for self defense.

I am just thinking in the lines of making them less threatening looking to the general public, but if needed they can help kick some major butt.
I will start making some of these as soon as I get the next order finished and let you guys see what I am talking about.
Bruce

I work with a lot of forward looking liberals (read: sheeple) and its true...show them something with a black blade like my Colt Python folder (I know, I know...got it before hanging here ;)) or my Livesay Woo and they get antsy "Who are ya gunna kill with that?"
But...if I take out my CRKT mirage or AlMar gents folder or Dozier K-9 and the attitude is "Oh look Wally is using his little knife"
And this comes from people surrounded by box cutters and razors, sheesh.
I'll let y'all know if I get fired when I bring in the GTB after the show on 11-2
