Traditional Trade Thread?

Just testing the waters on this one. Would folks be interested in a Traditional Trade Thread? I was planning to sign up for a basic membership anyways and thought if people were interested I could set up a thread in the Trading Forum for Traditionals. This could be a place for us all to trade for fun, doesn't have to be highdollar stuff, just a way to pass on knives so as to try new patterns etc. Well let me know if there's interest and maybe we can get the ball rolling. If i'm missing something and this already exists let me know.

It's been done. I don't think it'll ever happen again, the temptation for abuse is far too great.

Wrong place for this. Moving to Tech Support, General Q&A, Site Feedback & More.

What was tried before was a trading thread in the Traditional sub-forum. There were problems with it and it ended up being closed down. Starting a traditional knives thread in the Trade section of the Exchange would be a different proposition and might work.

well thats heartening. I guess the thing to watch out for would be for vultures coming in and grabbing stuff up without sending what they promise? could probably be nipped in the bud by requiring a minimum number of posts. Yablonowitz - do you know by chance what some of the other issues were with the past thread? appreciate the insights

A couple of points to note.

1. After a couple of days the thread would be a few pages back and would be going further back every day.
2. It could/would be used as a way for non paying members to post and skirt the rules.

Now if you were suggesting a separate trade forum for Traditionals that would be something else entirely. As someone who looks through the trade forum almost everyday I don't think that would get a whole lot of traction though. There is diversity in the trade forum from low to high end modern productions, midtechs and customs, and even traditionals. Fixed and folders of each. I just don't think that there is enough of one group to necessitate different trade subforums, like it is done with the For Sale by Individuals. It would also be one or more rooms for the mods to monitor and clean up as necessary.

Traditionals also seem to be a little less common in the Trade forums. Of the first two pages (50 threads) only about 5 or 6 of them are traditionals. They aren't my style though, so maybe the conversation is worth having between those who would use such a place.

Right. I check the trade forum now and then and notice that traditionals are very hard to come by. Its hard to sift through all the posts to find someone looking to trade traditionals. I guess my idea would be to start a thread (not a subforum) that would be easier to check in on. The thread would start to get pushed back, but I'd imagine it would come up in searches and get bumped back to the front when folks have something they want to post for trade. and only Basic members or above could post items for trade. I wouldnt want to bug moderators about opening a subforum. I guess you're right about people skirting rules, but if that happens I'm not sure I see how it would be the fault of the thread itself. I am curious about the specific problems the old traditional trade thread ran into as I'd want to avoid them or if they seem inevitable than I'd rather just drop the issue and not risk opening pandora's box.

Hmmm, well now I see a potential problem. If this traditional trading thread ran as one thread in the Knives and tools trading forum then I guess non-basic or higher members could potentially try to post items and it would be harder to regulate that since they wouldn't actually be starting new threads. I imagine the possibility that this would be a drain on moderators since they'd need to patrol a single thread as if it were a whole forum. Well I'll just leave the idea to hang and see what other members and/or moderators think. I think it could be a good thing, but as we all know the road to hell is paved with good intentions...

Exactly.

The thread could be found in searches. The only way to get a thread to the front is to post a new one, which would defeat the purpose of your thread.

It is an interesting idea, just too many variables. If you really want to trade just get a Basic membership and trade to your hearts content. Or, if you want to sell as well, you can post in the Traditional for sale and title it FSOT (for sale or trade). This would take a Gold Membership though.

Some months ago there was a Pay It Forward thread in General that started out with good intentions. The idea was to post an item to give away to the first person who claimed it. Started off well enough and spawned about 8 or 9 subsequent threads. However, I believe they eventually devolved into a trade/gimme thread with certain posters claiming a bunch of stuff and deals going on behind the scenes. (not exactly sure as I didn't follow them too often)

The last line of your quote can be all too true sadly.
