Two of my favorite things are traditional knives and playing cards (especially Bicycle/ USPCC). Wish I had some of my favorite decks on hand, but I'm away from home atm. Anyone else into playing cards?

I think this might get moved to Carl's Lounge, as short of "cutting the deck" I'm not sure what cards have to do with knives.

But I'm with you anyway. I've been a card player since I was 8-9 years old, if not younger. My mom taught me to play Bridge in 6th grade, and by the time I was 19 I had played in large tournaments and had Master Points. We also love to play Pinochle and Buck Euchre, and I played a lot of 5 Card Draw and 7 Card Stud for money in school. Our family still plays cards of some kind nearly every time we get together.

I like to play, but seldom do anymore.

This reminds me of my late father and uncles. I lived by my grandmother when I was young, and the whole family came every saturday.
They played spades and poker for hours, and when they got through they would set around and sharpen their Case knives on their whetstones.

I also collect full decks of playing cards, Bicycle brand being one area. I have many vintage decks including unopened, tax stamped decks. For the vintage/antique ones I have New Fan backs, Expert Backs, Acorn Backs, League Backs, Cupid Backs, Santa Backs, Tangent backs, Stag backs as well as a few others. I also have some of the newer oddball ones as well as magic decks. I also collect vinatge WW2 era pinup decks from Vargas, Elvgren, McPhearson, etc, Souvenir decks, Airline/Ship/Train company decks, Advertising decks and random stuff here and there...

Awesome thread! Cards and knives... My favourite collectibles all together in one place! Only thing better would be to add antique woodworking tools!

Very nice!

I like picturing that. :)

Okay, the above is cheating (puzzle lid as backdrop), but Piatnik cards are among my favorites, and I have some that match those of the background:

Patience decks and a Pemberton:

Bicycle has come out with some interesting variations as of late:

As sweet as the Piatniks et al are, I miss the once-readily-available dime store decks of my youth, either US Playing Card Co or Hoyle(?); the card font and characters/cards were slimmer, with four-color ink. I've seen some like them since, but the royalty is "gloppier" (more broadly drawn, with thicker hair and other variations). O, nostalgia.

Fun thread-- thanks. :)

Family likes to play pinochle. Used to live a lot closer to relatives so don't play as often. If a visit is especially short we will get a few hands of pinochle in right off the bat. If my wife and mother beat my dad and I the game will go on a little longer. If my dad and I win handily that will be pretty much it as tempers start to get short.

I like the thread too. Vintage playing cards would be fun to collect. Don't get me started... :D
