I'm new in knives and determined that one of the types of knives that I'm interested in are traditionals like Case and GEA etc. The thing I don't like is the metal in the blades I've seen. Does anyone know of these type of knives that have stainless steel or a upgraded steel like in many of the newer tactical knives? Thanks Jim

Queen uses ATS34 and D2, Opinel uses a nice Sandvik stainless I believe, AG Russel knives are 7cr, 8cr and VG10 on some I believe. Actually even Rough Rider and Colt use 440 stainless.

Welcome Jim. Good suggestions from supratentorial and Neko2. A Northwoods Indian River Jack or Everybody Barlow (made by Queen) may be to your liking, but hard to find.

I'd also say don't rule out the GEC brand from Great Eastern Cutlery, or one of their 1095 models and let it develop a nice patina. Plenty of good picks here in the traditional forum.

Like it was said Queen/ Schatt and Morgan/ Tuna Valley use quite a bit of stainless(mainly the latter two). Select Case knives have 154cm, and they put out a ton of stuff in their tru-sharp stainless steel. All Bucks come in stainless except for their semi recent special runs in 5160 and d2. GECs in stainless are somewhat rare, but they are out there. You can still track down USA made Schrades in their Schrade+ stainless. Canal Street Cutlery is a really nice company that recently went out of business. They used stainless and shouldn't be to tough to track down. Then you have customs. That's where you'll start seeing higher end steels becoming more and more common. That's all I can the of at the moment.
High end steel in production traditionals is pretty rare though. But if you can learn to be content with 420/440, then your options become significantly better. Still, carbon steel seems to be the majority(Case excluded).

The above mentioned plus Trestle Pine and Cold Steel ranch boss are a couple that come to mind..

Not quite clear on your descriptions of Case and GEC - both offer carbon or stainless blade steel; Case has more choices with stainless blades, GEC offers more in carbon (1095) blades. OH

I guess it all depends on what it is about these traditional steels you don't like. What qualities are you specifically looking for?
