Behold, my first Jackknife-esque posting.
Hope I can do the originator proud.
People talk of history, and tradition. Yesterday, though, was a great brush with it.
My dad is a Freemason, as was my grandfather before him, and generations further. Yesterday was my turn. It was a one-day class, which many will scorn lightly as being non-traditional, but that's the best I could do. Going about it the long way would require time I won't have for a few years. Yet, after all was done, my dad pulled me aside, and passed me a small box.
In it, a ring. Not just any ring, though. The body of it was my dad's, before he got his Shrine ring, with "DLD 3-8-76" engraved, and now, it has "CDD 3-31-07" next to it. On the left side was something familiar- one of my grandfather's lapel pins, worked and set into the side. On the right, one of my great-grandfather's lapel pins, set equally.
So now it is mine, gracing my ring finger proudly. Great-grandfather, grandfather, father, and me, all tied into one.
I love tradition.
