Trail Blazer Xtreme 17.4oz Hatchet

No experience, but I saw one in a store. I was unimpressed. The blade is flat stock, about 1/8", stainless. The handle shape does seem like it'd be functional. But for the price, i'd go with something else.

Shecky - Thanks for the information. I had a hunch that the blade was flat stock. The handle is interesting though.
Dave.

stainless heads scare me.

and at 17.4 oz, - a CS Trail Hawk would do ya better, i reckon.

given that hatchet's dynamics - maybe you should try a cleaver, like the old confederates used to do.

YMMV

vector001 - Is it the lack of impact strength that scares you about stainless in this application?

stainless just is easy to screw up, brother.

sometimes they like to fracture under stress in discouraging ways, at least in my experience - but i am an ex-marine (okay, former maybe ...:)...) so everything blows up around me sooner opr later ...hehehe...!

with all the cryo treatments and such, that might not be applicable, if they did that to this hatchet ...dunno....

but when i don't know, it don't go...:)....

i mod the Cold Steel tomahawk line, and others, like in my signature - and their simple 1055 steels, etc. just hold up so nicely, with a good regular spray paint, or something really nice like one of the gun coats, stainless hatchets just seem like paying extra for less to me.

YMMV.

hope i didn't confuse the issue, brother, and sorry to get back late to this thread.

your bud,

Vector001 -
Thanks for the information. Now I have a good idea why stainless hatchets are rare. My dad was a Marine, and he always said, "Once a Marine, always a Marine". Semper Fi
Dave. :)

Vec, How do the cold steel hawks hold up against rust with the coating removed?Do you blue them?
BTW I love your work.

thanks, brother! - coming from you that means a lot!

....and sorry i didn't see this post sooner too.

my hawks are always under development, brother 'slayer -

i have tried bluing, and right now i spray paint the heads - just good ol' flat Rustoleum spray paint (or equivalent) - i find that when the hawks are in use, they don't rust hardly worth mentioning, ...and when ya get done, ya just liven up the edge and spray paint right over the whole head and they are like new until next time.

the paint peels back neatly on the next chop, but is a durable protective coat for the rest of the head.

the painted edge is visual, unlike oil, etc. - so you can see the level of protection at any time - i am often testing around saltwater, so the full-paint method might be helping a bit with pernicious oxidation (is that a real term? har!!!)....

we are about to go to a durable coating - i'm gonna try GunKote i think its called, and then some other stuff.

i am about to start airbrushing the hawks on top of complex finishes (cross your fingers for me! har!) so colors are very important to us - normal bluing would be substandard - so another point for paint there.

I also have some slurries i formulated that i think will work well in place of anything else available, but i don't have time to test them sufficiently - the investors are helping a lot with the R&D end so far, so i am blessed that way....

if i don't know it works, i don't ship it.

brother neit82 - yup, like a butcher's cleaver - you got it, brother.

brethren, sorry once again for getting back late.

i'll check back soon, not that that is important.

oh! a few cool cats here ordered some of my hawks a while back (prepare thyself for true! hahaha!), and they are just about done, now that i am getting ahead - i will make contact and get them to ya shortly.

yours,

vec
