  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Trail Hawk before and after

Moose from the Becker forum gave me an old TrailHawk head and I sanded off the old paint then used a hot peroxide and salt bath to try and give it a brown rust finish. The result was more of a rough black than the brown I was trying for but I like it.I put a hickory handle that was sanded and rubbed with boiled linseed oil on it.The set screw hole was retapped with a 1/4 20 thread tap to repair the mangled threads but after reading a lot of threads here I am not going to use it and am thinking about epoxying a brass bolt and cutting the head off to fill the hole. Here are the before and after pics.

I noticed that the bottom 2" or so of the bit looked different when it was first pulled out of the h2o2 and salt bath and i reckon that that area is a higher rockwell for edge holding and the eye and hammer poll and upper are softer for toughness.A test with a file confirmed my wild ass guess.
