Just found a black blade trailmaster that was said to be carbon-v. The box says its carbon-v but the blade is not marked with a steel make. My old trailmaster says carbon-v on the blade, this one says "trailmaster" on one side and "cold steel usa" on the other could this be an SK-5 steel trailmaster? Thanks.

I have the san mai 3 trailmaster so i cant say for sure but I own alot of CS products and every carbonv knife has it stamped on the ricasso, might just be they didn't reprint sk-5 on the new boxes to save the cost.

FWIW, I've got a carbon-V trailmaster (satin finished, not black) Also, this one is laser-engraved near the spine, not stamped on the ricasso.

On one side it says "TRAILMASTER" and underneath in smaller letters "CARBON V STEEL"

On the other side "Cold Steel" and underneath in smaller letters "MADE IN THE USA"

They make black epoxy coated TM's now and they look like hell and the paint is crappy and scrapes up like mad. I would only own an older one. I have some of them and like to customize them along with some other old CS knives with new handles.

I checked my Carbon V knives and they all say "Carbon V." I don't have any trailmasters, and my newest Cold Steel knives are from 2003.

You might want to check if the SK5 knives are made in the USA or not. If they were not, and yours says that it was made in the USA, then it should be Carbon V.

I've read posts by some people who prefer SK5 for large knives.

Some of the black finished ones are not marked Carbon V. But they are Carbon V see the picture below.

Almost forgot---check the rivet. If memory serves all Carbon-V (USA made) knives with kraton handles use a brass colored rivet to secure the handle to the tang. Stainless and SK5 (foreign) ones use a silver colored rivet.

I have a Trail Master/box NIB marked the same way. I purchased it new ~4.5 years ago from a local CS dealer.
