Training blades for Wegner?

So, in keping with the philosophy of "train with what you carry" I am trying to find an unsharpened blade for my full sized Spyderco Wegner. Anyone know if they are available from the factory (or anywhere else for that matter?). Barring that, is it possible to buy just a normal blade from Spyderco so that I can grind it down myself? Sal?

Any info would be greatly apprecated!

Why would you want to train with a unsharpened blade, unless you plan to spar with someone? It's like training with a foam nunchaku. Why waste your time? It's better to train with a live blade, it'll teach you a lesson if you're not careful.

Not a bad idea. I carry the Wegner more than any other knife.

I plan on picking up a couple of Endura trainers to work with. They aren't Wegners but they are a more cost effective substitute. I believe that generally a trainer isn't very much cheaper than the live version.

CYA-"ouch!". Training blades aren't just for for protection of your target, they also protect you (and your clothes if you are doing fast, present from concealment drills!) Think about what happens if you hit a target and your folding knife is not locked open all the way. Odds are your index finger gets cut bad by the closing blade.

So, any suggestions on where I might pick up a spare blade? I'd rather not use an Endura trainer since the Wegner has differnt ergonomics.

Hi CJL. I would suggest using an old "beater" if such a piece exists. grinding down heat treated steel is difficult though.

We don't carry spare blades, but unless you are a custom knife maker, changing blades is very diffcult.

I see your point, CJL101. But like I said it will teach you a lesson!

I guess I'm thinking too much like a balisonger!

Just my personal opinion on training knives: they are not needed and are actually a hazard to training.
Since you cannot cut yourself, it's real easy to develope lousy techniques and form.
I've seen more than one "knife-fighter" using a training knife, and had the blade been sharp, there would have been a pile of fingers on the ground.
I even had an argument with a friend when he refused to believe he had grabbed the "blade" of his training knife. I had to play back the camcorder to show him his mistake.
Just an observation I wanted to share.
Allen.

Exactly! This is what I was trying to say. Although if you are stabbing a target with force then maybe you might want a trainer because if the lock fails you could lose a finger.

Allen and CYA- I agree with both of you on the fact that live blades do encourage better technique. I do feel though that "axidents WILL happen" and if the axident involves an incredibly sharp 4" blade...like you said, missing fingers could be the least of our worries.

The training techniques we are using right now involve practicing the paterns slow to get them clean and then speeding up the drills to get the balence and flow correct. Right now we use wooden or rubber practice knives but since some of the the techniques involve present from concealment of a folding blade we want to acquire proper safe blades for that as well. The rubber or wooden ones are better for stikes past this initial one.

CJL101: I think you have just shared a great idea for a startup company! Just make "trainers" of each of the more popular knive patterns! Too bad you would have to have a contract with each of the original makers...for royalties and such...Sing me another Tim Wegner Clipit fan. I have had it in the safe, for a while. I have been carrying the CRKT Apache ( and the Mirage ). But, your post reminded me of how much I liked carrying the c48...rdogout
p.s. I think the Wegner is one of my favorites when it comes to quick deployment ( for right -hand carry ). Just dig deep and find the thumb hole and the knife is ready...good luck finding a suitable trainer. If I had any capital, I would help you start the company.

Ewok- sorry, right now it is just myself, my girlfriend and two members of my fencing class working out after class. A couple of us took Ray Ellingson's class down in Ventura two years back and have been building off that. If I get the time together I would like to attend the MBC claas in late fall.

Rob19- Thanks, but you are correct: the legal headaches look like they could be a problem. Especially since Spyderco and Benchmade have both started producing training blades in the last year in house (I move I greatly applaud!). Quite a few places produce trainers for varrious fixed blades or fixed versions of folders. Check out TrainingBlades.com for one.

It looks like I will have to go the route Sal suggested. Anyone got a realy thrashed Wegner they want to sell?
