Tramontina not taking a patina?

Ok so I put a new handle and reshaped the blade on one of my trams and wanted to top off the mods with a vinegar patina. I heard the best way to do large blades is soak paper towels and wrap around the blade, so thats what I did for a good hour and a half. And contrary to what i thought was gonna happen, only the bevel was effected. It wad laid propped up edge down so i first thought oxygen could only get to the edge but that doesn't make sense cause there were ripples and air bubbles in the wrap.
Does Tramontina put some protective clear coating on their machetes to stop rust? Should I sand the blade and try again?I know its far off but its all I can think of. Any ideas or answers would be appreciated.

I modded one of mine, changed the blade shape and sanded it, it took a patina fine. I have a few untouched unused Trams in storage that look exactly the same as they did when i bought them, no spotting or rust even thought a couple of other knives in the same trunk got some tiny rust spots. Just rub it down with some medium sandpaper and give it a good cleaning and try again.

I've left large blades wrapped overnight in vinegared paper towels. Maybe an hour and a half wasn't enough?

I sanded it with 220 grit and washed it. Wrapped it up this morning and came back to take it off during my lunch break, so a good 5 hours or so. Here some before and after.

There is a coating on at least some of them. I thought 1070 must be rust-proof until I figured it out:D

All of 'em, to the best of my knowledge and experience, have a clear lacquer coating. It's thin, but it's there. Lighter fluid or mineral spirits strips it right off.

Yep. Lacquer. On some of them you can see little air bubbles in it.
