Impulse buy at the hardware today, nice feel, wide blade and handle. It says Hi Carbon Stainless, anybody know what it is? 440A?

It was $5.00

Dave, I don't know waht the steel is exactly, but Tramontina is a huge Brazilian company which makes a lot of run-of-the-mill knives. Almost every table knife and grocery-store knife in Argentina and Brazil is Tramontina. I imagine they have a range though. I guess you'll have to wait and see how the blade reacts to guess what it is. They have a website (unfortunately in portugese). If I knew which knife you were talking about maybe I could find out....

the site is:

hey, if you look at the top of the page they have it in spanish and english too -- who knew!!??

They're not very sharp.... at least the ones I've come a cross.... I've seen how "dull" they're because the edge reflected light.

Tramontina are pretty decent knives. they use them at the keg (at least at the kegs in canada). They use them cuz there cheep and they cut steak. When it comes to cutting steak, all ya need is a good serrated knife and you'll be ok, even if the serr. aren't sharp at all. it aint rocket science.

In my opinion i think your better off with a nice serrated knife while cutting steak than something with a straight edge. the plate your cutting on will do a number on a straight edge.

there not too bad. when I was dating my wife i bought her a set at x-mas time, well they eventually moved in with me!!!

there not bad, but they do require frequent sharpening, but for the money I paid (under twenty dollars) there ok.

but they arent henckels!!!
