Trance or Hyper?

I'm contemplating picking up my first Boker, and I'm torn between the Trance and the Hyper. Both seem to be outstanding values, and they are both about the size I am looking for.

I like materials used in the Hyper better, and I like the deep-carry clip. But I'm concerned the handle might feel too short in the hand. The ergos on the Trance look like they might be a little better.

I know the best thing to do would be to handle both knives personally, but the closest place that would have both is NGK, which is about 150 miles each way. I'd gladly give up the time, but the $50 in gas makes it not worth it.

So, is there a big difference as to how these knives feel in the hand? Is there anything else worth considering that might tip the scales either way? Thank you in advance for any advice you're willing to offer.

hey Brodie001, sorry too tired to post pix...but the Hyper doesn't feel too short (albeit I have small hands)...it fits great....with a firm "four finger" grip... my pinkie doesn't really have too much purchase on the handle but with all the "jimping" along the "thumbrest" area of the handle (which continues onto the blade over the thumbstud) provides plenty of traction....the knife balances at the forefinger choil.... the Trance does fit my hand a little better, with the "flipper" part of the blade providing a rather prominent "finger guard" in the opened position....really both are excellent....but different.... you can't go wrong w/either

I wouldn't worry about the handle. Chad is the master of the "little, big knife", and the handle on the Hyper is deceptively hand-filling.

Yeah, I'm still torn between the two. I think I'm leaning towards the Trance, primarily because it seems to be a "tried and true" model. Lots of people have used and abused them and still like them, and they are successful enough for Boker to come out with a second version. It even sounds like the Trance might be CLB's favorite from the way he talks about it on his site.

dude, I love my trance. I loved it so much, I bought new custom scales, bronze washers and ANOTHER ONE.

A great knife and fitsmy hand perfect.

go for it!

The prices on this line of knives are incredible for what you get. They all perform perfectly. There are knives with better blade steel, but these have a place in my pocket.
Here is something to think about. The Trance has a flipper that is very fast, the Hyper does not. The Trance has a full flat grind = great slicing.
Oh yes, you could get both.

OK, next question: Drop point Trance, or original? Looks like the original might have a stronger tip, but the drop point would be a better slicer. Planning on using this for EDC, which means mostly light duty stuff, but I want it to stand up the occasional tougher chore.

Drop point=utility. Original point=better penetration. Your call. Post what you get.

As Lycosa said, your call. Rember these are thin, light, folders built for light to mid work, select your blade and go with it. Of course, I had to have both just to be sure.:)

I decided not to pick up the drop point Trance, since my original works so well. That funny tip I wasn't sure about turned out to be really useful - a great penetrator and splinter-picker.

I just got the big M-Type. Amazing, just an instant favorite, a full-size EDC. But for an intermediate size, I still like the Trance better than the Hyper.

If you gonna use it for rough work i would choose the droppoint Trance over the original as i think the tip can handle more as it is less pronounced.

Either hyper for rough work . The Ti coating with 440c will give no trouble in wet surroundings i think.

Tough choice; both are great knives.;)

For outdoor or camping i would go with the M-Type or MPT.

I guess i made your choice harder:confused:.

None of them have high-end prices. All of them have high-end performance. Whatever I carry, I usually have the Subcom at hand, and will at least until I get a Subclaw. :)

The standard BF cry, "get both, get them all!" is especially appropriate here because 1) you really can afford more than one, and 2) each is distinct, with capabilities that complement the others.

Esav

You will be amazed with the slicing properties of the Subclaw. It performs best for opening tough packaging fe thick cardboard shell clamps zippies foils and other nasty stuff. Next to that i think it is a nice moneyclip and SD back-up. :)
