2 years ago I did my duke of edinburgh bronze award and I took a camping gaz gas stove but on our wild camp there were very strong wins and my gas stove was rubbish compared to the trangias is this usually the case ? What do people recomend I get. Must be something I can get in the uk for under £20.

Dear Stoned,
welcome to the forums from another Brit. It's kind of "you pays your money..." etc. Traigia kit is initially a bit on the steep side, i.e. £20 wont buy you much. Try £45-50 for a basic kit without a kettle. Now you can get Chinese copies (with kettle) for about £20 but I really wouldn't recommend them. If you shell out for Trangia you can be sure of several things:

- it will work almost anywhere (best outdoors though ;) )
- it will last a lifetime
- it's a simple low tech operation
- fuel is always way cheaper than gas

The drawbacks (apart from the initial outlay)

- it is slower than gas for a quick brew
- sometimes it's hard to notice if they are still lit
- they are sometimes a challenge to light
- you will get the odd burn (part of the fun of camping!)

My advice is get a Trangia (a real one) and buy a cheap single burner for brews at lunchtime, afternoon tea, etc. If you're in no hurry just use the Trangia and skin up while you're waiting for the kettle to boil. :D

Ok so a trangia it is then. Are there any gade=gets around to make them easier to light (without the burns(I have already had that camping experiance)) ?
Also I only really want quite basic but reliable kit I don't mind about a kettle cause I can boil water in a pot if I need 2. So hopefully I wont have to pay too much.
You didn't mention weight which isn't really an issue now but I hope to get to do some travelling and walking for a cuple of weeks I want as light a pack as possible.

I'd get some long matches and/or best of all a gas lighter with a catalyst in it, the kind they sell as windproof; I just got one from The Malboro Lady for free they are like a mini-blow torch. I would also recommend a small pair of tongs or forceps for adjusting and putting the cover on to extinguish it. I bought a Trangia in a hurry but if you shop round you may get below £40 but they do last forever remember. I would have paid extra for a non-stick fryingpan but they were out of stock; I hate washing up.
