 Hey people: once again I come begging for help:) . I have a new Toshiba laptop. What would be the best and quickest way to transfer my Windows Media files (about 9,000 songs) between my Dell PC and my Toshiba laptop? And how to do it? Or links to a site on how to do it? I am especially indebted to Mr. Gollnick on this site for pulling my neolithic arse out of the stone age in to the digital age. Thanks very much in advance.:D

Do you have a DVD burner on the dell or a high speed internet connection capable of hooking up both computers simultaneously?

Why not just copy them to an external hard drive and then keep them there - or do you need to carry them with you on the laptop?

Set up a home network, and transfer the files over that is the easiest way. (If you're using Windows XP, that is...) Refer to the Help files and the Wizards for setting up a network and you should be good.

An inexpensive external hard drive would be the easiest way. It is nice to have your music backed up too.

Just burn it all onto dvd and then copy from that with the laptop. Some of the other options mentioned could be faster if you had all the stuff, but not faster when you include going to the store to buy it -- not to mention that they cost money.

It'll be nice to have everything backed up on dvd, too.

The easiest is probably the DVD burn, although you will need quite a few DVDs (9000 songs at approx. 3 MB per song that's 27,000 MB or 27 Gigs approx. 5 to 7 DVDs.

This might actually be a good option as you'd have a backup of your songs.

If you have an iPOD or other MP3 player you can use it as a hard drive to copy MP3s from one machine to the other. I would think that maybe you don't have an iPod as you mention Microsoft Media instead of iTunes. Anyhow, usually with the MP3 players that use Microsoft Media player all you do is plug and play, find the drive corresponding to the MP3 player and copy-paste.

I wouldn't go with the wireless network option as I've found it's slower, but that may be because I have a B router (max 10 Mbps).

Good luck.

Easiest way would be to send all the songs to me and then hook your new computer up and let me know the email addy and I'll send em back to you. :D I'm on cable now and stuff loads real fast!!!!

I second this idea. I use a 40G Iomega mini HD to back up all music and photos from both my laptop and my wife's desktop. Do you really want a bunch of discs lying around when you can have it in a nice compact little HD?

From ThinkGeek.

Handiest thing that exists for transferring files between computers. :)

I'll throw in another vote for backing them up on dvd if both the computers can read dvds.)
Otherwise I'd back them up on cds.
I have about 120 gb of music files backed up on over 100 cds (started before dvds were a viable option).
I used to run 1 pc with multiple hard drives, with the same files backed up on multiple hard drives, figuring that would be foolproof.
Well, I had multiple hard drives fail over a period of 3 days, and if I didn't have the files also backed up on cds, I would have lost most of the files.
I also had a few friends with external hard drives for all their backups that had the external drives fail, & they had to say goodbye to all their backed up data.
With the price of blank dvds nowadays, I shifted from blank cds to blank dvds to do backups. Saves a good amount of storage space & is more economical as well. When I start to run low, I buy a few 100 disk spindles of dvd+r discs when they are on sale at best buy (last week I bought 2 spindles of fujifilm dvd+r for $24.99 each there). That way if I run out in between sales, I don't have to pay the regular price for them.
I've had great luck with TDK, Fujifilm, Sony, and Philips discs. The only coaster I ever burned was when the power went out in the middle of a burn.
