The company I work for has offered me a transfer to Louisville Kentucky and I was wondering if any of you were from there? I will be moving from Vermont but that is OK because I moved here from Alabama.

I will be working on West Broadway. What are some of the smaller towns that would be in commuting range from there?

Are there any wierd knife or gun laws there? How about automatic knives?

Are there any knife stores there?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. It looks like they are going to give me about 30 days to get there.

CAL,
I live about 45 minutes west of Louisville. Send me an email, and I'll fill you in.

Spark lived in Louisville before he moved to the Sunshine State.

Well, aside from a usually excellent basketball team [oh, wait, you're moving to Louisville, not Lexington...

] we have a "shall issue" concealed carry law that applies to guns, knives, etc. No autos though.

I thought CCW allowed auto knife carrying in KY? I always had autos and the cops never did anything about them.

Anyhow, Louisville kicks serious ass. Great food, good arts / theatre community, plenty of bars and restaurants and pubs (tons and tons).

Ok shopping, but not downtown. As a matter of fact, downtown Luavull dies after dark, everything happens on the city limits or in the county.

Great firearms laws and stores, but *very* few indoor ranges; only 2 that I know of. If you want to shoot, you are better off finding a friend that lives on plenty of land and is hopefully close by. No real knife stores that I know of - only a few dealers carry anything worth looking at.

Cost of living is low-to-medium. Quality of life is high. Fortunately, Kit lives 45 minutes away (by Ft. Knox) so the quality of living for Louisville is much higher than if he actually lived within city limits

Weather is pretty good, though it's *gray* from November to February - pretty depressing. Not as cold as VT, I'm sure, but it rains a lot more than it snows.

Let me know via email what / where you are looking at home wise and I'll give you as much help as I can about good areas, schools, food, etc.

I had the good fortune to spend a few weekends in Kentucky while I was trapped in Atlanta Monday through Friday. I spent my time mainly in the more rural areas of Kentucky and loved every minute of it.

Knob Creek is about ~30 miles SouthWest of Louisville if I remember correctly. It's one of the biggest class 3 shooting meets in the U.S.!

I moved to Lousville from Lexington 3 years ago. I'm a cop for one of the suburban cities that borders Louisville. I personally love it here. State gun laws are very pro gun with shall issue carry permits and a preexemption to keep cities from passing any more restrictive laws. Downtown Louisville is pretty cool during the day and the Bardstown road corridor is cool at night as well as the other bar and shopping districts. You can drive 40 minutes and be in the middle of the country. You have all the things spark mentioned in the city and beautiful country surrounding. If you come here, I would be glad to spend a day showing you (and family if you are bringing one) around. OH, don't forgot the world's largest fireworks show, THUNDER OVER LOUISVILLE, this year on 04-15. And then there is always the derby if you can stand the crowd. Emai me at lhc9185@hotmail.com if you have any questions.

CAL,
I'm not from Louisville but my in-laws live there. I always enjoy taking a trip up there to visit. There's lots of caves to visit all over that area if your into that sort of thing. If you get a chance you have to see Thunder Over Louisville - it's an awesome fireworks display! There's usually an airshow with it.

My father-in-law carries an automatic knife everywhere he goes and he's never had any problems with it. Someday I hope to move there. I can't wait to get out of all this cactus and scrub and go where the grass is green. I envy you. Best of luck.

I am a CCW instructor in Kentucky. Ky. has no specific auto laws. They and six other items are considered deadly weapons. You can legally carry an auto with a CCW permit in KY. It is basically considered the same as a gun (ie a deadly weapon).

When you get there and want something to do on a Saturday, make sure you visit the Gold Vault and the George S. Patton Museum, both at Fort Knox -- 28 miles south down 31W-60, sometimes known as the Dixie Dieway, but don't drink and drive cause the cops in the little burg of West Point like to fatten the coffers with speeders and drunks. Wow, that was one long sentence!
