Transport in Checked Luggage

Any ideas out there for legally transporting large folder in checked luggage? I would like to take one with me on my weekly journeys, but fear the ever-present pilfering of luggage handlers. I have NO time to tape or saran wrap the luggage closed.

I had a similar problem when I needed to transport a large WWII boot knife to a show to get it identified. In fact, I was in line for security when I realized it was in my carry-on luggage - imagine the hassles I'd have run into if they saw that on the x-ray! So I caught my checked luggage and stuffed the knife behind a flap of fabric on the bottom of by suitcase. My feeling was that it was highly unlikely, with the volume of luggage going through the system, that my scruffy bag would look like it held anything valuable. And if it was rifled, they'd have to take out all the contents to open the flap on the bottom. When you do pack something like that in checked luggage and you choose not to tape or wrap it, I believe it's best to look as though your luggage isn't worth messing with -- don't lock it, don't have expensive luggage, etc. Hope this helps.

I have hauled knives all over the world in checked luggage. Sometimes up to 10 knives at a time varying from folders to machete length. Never had a problem at all. I have had the check-in folks ask me if my bags had any weapons and I usually just tell them there are knives in there. In some of the overseas airports that have a dangerous rating they will inspect luggage by hand or X-ray all bags before they hit the baggage belt. Again, no problems. Most of the time I wrap knives in clothes inside my pack...especially if they are dirty clothes that have that unique sour jungle smell... it keeps the baggage handlers at bay.
