Transporting axes. A lot of axes!

Does anyone have a good way of transporting multiple axes at once? I'm talking about moving upwards of a dozen at a time. (I'm looking in the direction of the other collectors on the forum)

I'm thinking of getting something akin to an old wooden coke bottle crate and retrofitting the dividers to hold axes head down, hafts up. Then with the handles on the sides of the crate I bet I could move a good number at a time fairly easily. Although weight is the real issue, not space.

Moving companies offer what they call a wardrobe box; they're very heavy duty cardboard and have a metal hanger bar that goes across the top and stabilizes the box. They can probably hold 20 or so axes and work well. This assumes you have a dolly and you're not lifting the box into the back of your pickup. :) Good luck.

Good morning fellas... Nick, I too have been searching for a better way to store or move my pcs around. On modern marvels, they had a segment dedicated to axes, and a guy on the show kept his racing axes in a nice wooden box with a hinged lid, handles, and a lock. I haven't been able to find a box like his, so I'm thinkin it may be a "one off" piece. Keep us posted on what you decide to go with sir.

Are you transporting them, or having ups or usps do it?

If you are transporting I have a fews things I have done in the past, depending on what packing materials you have and such.

I'm not looking to ship these axes. I'm more interested in tossing them in a truck bed from time to time.

Broady, I saw that too. It seems a little overkill for what I need. I don't plan on storing them in this box just transporting them.

I've just put them between folds of a heavy canvas tarp.

I wonder if you could cut some of the dividers out of an old milk crate and stick them head down in it. Something like this:

Now there's an idea. You wouldn't even need any dividers. Just get a painter's drop cloth and cut it into strips a little wider than your milk crate. Then fold a layer over each new axe you add to the pile. Simple and nobody is banging into anybody else.

If just a dozen I would put each head in some small box such as a small flat rate priority box, with some painters tape over the edge. Could also wrap each head in an old shirt or towel. If needed into a large box after that.

When I'm out and about where I need tools, I often take a cheap "footlocker" from mardens and lay my tools in it. I take a good sized blanket and make folds as I go for the tools I don't want dinged up.

I have done a couple things - pure vintage redneck -

Once I had i think 8 axes, single bit, and had one of the old canvas tarps, good old ones, quality, almost like carhartt. Took that and folded it and then started with one axe and covered it, then put the other axe on top cheek to cheek, then brought the tarp back over, back and forth, etc until all covered, so each head had a layer of tarp in between, then wrapped the tarp back over the entire group - basically making a zig zag pattern underneath wrapped in a tarp - it worked really well - held firm plus came off ok without rope, tape etc, though you could use some if you choose.

An old timer told me the best way to transport an axe is to have a large wooden block that is carved out for the head of the axe - put that over your head, and in the back of your truck. Maybe a double series of 4x4s or 6x6s cut out, you could stick the heads in, and if the boards are heavy enough would probably allow the axes to stay standing if you wish, depending on terrain.

Couple ideas - I have some others I have used, but not as good as the canvas tarp one. That worked well for me.

Surplus artillery ammo crate. Since these are usin' axes, I don't think you mind if they bang around a bit. If you do, you can roll them in canvass cloth.

How about getting one of these:

"A LOT OF AXES" would dictates that your collection is just one or two shy of what Operator1975 has :D
